[Termes IGN] polarisationRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present a quantitative comparison of L- and C-band airborne synthetic aperture radar imagery acquired at like- and cross-polarizations over deformed sea ice under winter conditions. The parameters characterizing the deformation state of the ice are determined at both radar bands and at different polarizations. The separation of deformed and level ice is based on a target detection technique. The threshold is set such that image pixels with intensities equal to or larger than the highest 2% of the level-ice intensity distribution are classified as deformed ice, independent of the radar configuration and ice conditions. Optical imagery of sufficient quality for comparison is available only in a very few cases. To characterize the deformation state, the areal fraction of deformation features and the average distance between these features are evaluated. The values obtained for both parameters are very sensitive to the radar frequency. Aeral fractions are larger, and average distances are smaller at L-band than at C-band because of the much higher intensity contrast between the deformed and level ice at L-band. The differences between polarizations at one radar band are smaller but not always negligible. In comparison to optical images, it was observed that deformed-ice areas can be distinguished from level ice over their whole length and exten-sion at L-band, whereas at C-band, often, only prominent parts are visible. [Termes IGN] radargrammétrieRésumé : (Auteur) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are extensively used for dark formation detection in the marine environment, as their recording is independent of clouds and weather. Dark formations can be caused by man made actions (e.g. oil spill discharging) or natural ocean phenomena (e.g. natural slicks, wind front areas). Radar backscatter values for oil spills are very similar to backscatter values for very calm sea areas and other ocean phenomena because they damp the capillary and short gravity sea waves. The ability of neural networks to detect dark formations in high resolution SAR images and to discriminate oil spills from look-alike phenomena simultaneously was examined. Two different neural networks are used; one to detect dark formations and the second one to perform a classification to oil spills or look-alikes. The proposed method is very promising in detecting dark formations and discriminating oil spills from look-alikes as it detects with an overall accuracy of 94% the dark formations and discriminate correctly 89% of examined cases. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) is a promising recent technique for the generation of digital elevation models and/or the measurement of ground surface deformations. In InSAR data processing, the first step is the image co-registration, achieved by using a set of tie points which are the conjugate image points on the master and slave images. Tie points are selected with the aim of finding the conjugate point automatically on the slave image for any given point on the master image, by the process known as image matching. To achieve reliable matching, a set of points within a window is used instead of a single point. The size of the window will affect the reliability of matching. Hitherto there have been no effective methods for the determination of optimum window size for this purpose. In practice, this parameter is determined by experience. In this paper, a pair of SAR images is used to test the effect of window size on the reliability of co-registration. An optimum window size is selected on the basis of the experimental results. The determination of optimum window size for tie point matching is then examined theoretically, leading to a proposal for an automated method based on the auto-correlation of the SAR images, which reflects the similarity between image pixels. The auto-correlation function is decomposed into waves of various frequencies by a wavelet transform. By a combined analysis of the variations of wave amplitudes with frequency, the optimum window size for tie point matching can be determined. A procedure based on the use of Daubechies wavelet db1 is proposed in detail. An optimum window size could be determined in this way for any pair of SAR images.
