[Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (auteur) Terrestrial radar interferometry (TRI) can measure displacements at high temporal resolution, potentially with high accuracy. An application of this method is the observation of the surface flow velocity of steep, fast-flowing aglaciers. For these observations, the main factor limiting the accuracy of TRI observations is the spatial and temporal variabilities in the distribution of atmospheric water vapor content, causing a phase delay [atmospheric phase screen (APS)] whose magnitude is similar to the displacement phase. This contribution presents a geostatistical analysis of the spatial and temporal behaviors of the APS in Ku-Band TRI. The analysis is based on the assumption of a separable spatiotemporal covariance structure, which is tested empirically using variogram analysis. From this analysis, spatial and temporal APS statistics are estimated and used in a two-step procedure combining regression-Kriging with generalized least squares (GLS) inversion to estimate a velocity time-series. The performance of this method is evaluated by cross-validation using phase observations on stable scatterers. This analysis shows a considerable reduction in residual phase variance compared with the standard approach of combining the linear models of APS stratification and interferogram stacking. [Termes IGN] tachéomètre électroniqueRésumé : (auteur) This article examines advances in interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) satellite measurement technologies to understand their relevance, utilization, and limitations for bridge monitoring. Waterloo Bridge is presented as a case study to explore how InSAR data sets can be combined with traditional measurement techniques including sensors installed on the bridge and automated total stations. A novel approach to InSAR bridge monitoring was adopted by the installation of physical reflectors at key points of structural interest on the bridge, in order to supplement the bridge’s own reflection characteristics and ensure that the InSAR measurements could be directly compared and combined with in situ measurements. The interpretation and integration of InSAR data sets with civil infrastructure data are more than a trivial task, and a discussion of uncertainty of measurement data is presented. Finally, a strategy for combining and interpreting varied data from multiple sources to provide useful insights into each of these methods is presented, outlining the practical applications of this data analysis to support wider monitoring strategies. [Termes IGN] réflectométrie par GNSSRésumé : (auteur) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) interferometric reflectometry, also known as the GNSS-IR, uses data from geodetic-quality GNSS antennas to extract information about the environment surrounding the antenna. Soil moisture monitoring is one of the most important applications of the GNSS-IR technique. This manuscript presents the main ideas and implementation decisions needed to write the Python code for software tools that transform RINEX format observation and navigation files into an appropriate format for GNSS-IR (which includes the SNR observations and the azimuth and elevation of the satellites) and to determine the reflection height and the adjusted phase and amplitude values of the interferometric wave for each individual satellite track. The main goal of the manuscript is to share the software with the scientific community to introduce new users to the GNSS-IR technique. [Termes IGN] séismeRésumé : (auteur) On 10 May 2018, an unprecedented long and intense seismic crisis started offshore, east of Mayotte, the easternmost of the Comoros volcanic islands. The population felt hundreds of events. Over the course of 1 yr, 32 earthquakes with magnitude greater than 5 occurred, including the largest event ever recorded in the Comoros (Mw = 5.9 on 15 May 2018). Earthquakes are clustered in space and time. Unusual intense long lasting monochromatic very long period events were also registered. From early July 2018, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) registered a large drift, testimony of a large offshore deflation. We describe the onset and the evolution of a large magmatic event thanks to the analysis of the seismicity from the initiation of the crisis through its first year, compared to the ground deformation observation (GNSS and InSAR) and modelling. We discriminate and characterize the initial fracturing phase, the phase of magma intrusion and dyke propagation from depth to the subsurface, and the eruptive phase that starts on 3 July 2018, around 50 d after the first seismic events. The eruption is not terminated 2 yr after its initiation, with the persistence of an unusual seismicity, whose pattern has been similar since summer 2018, including episodic very low frequency events presenting a harmonic oscillation with a period of ∼16 s. From July 2018, the whole Mayotte Island drifted eastward and downward at a slightly increasing rate until reaching a peak in late 2018. At the apex, the mean deformation rate was 224 mm yr−1 eastward and 186 mm yr−1 downward. During 2019, the deformation smoothly decreased and in January 2020, it was less than 20 per cent of its peak value. A deflation model of a magma reservoir buried in a homogenous half space fits well the data. The modelled reservoir is located 45 ± 5 km east of Mayotte, at a depth of 28 ± 3 km and the inferred magma extraction at the apex was ∼94 m3 s−1. The introduction of a small secondary source located beneath Mayotte Island at the same depth as the main one improves the fit by 20 per cent. While the rate of the main source drops by a factor of 5 during 2019, the rate of the secondary source remains stable. This might be a clue of the occurrence of relaxation at depth that may continue for some time after the end of the eruption. According to our model, the total volume extracted from the deep reservoir was ∼2.65 km3 in January 2020. This is the largest offshore volcanic event ever quantitatively documented. This seismo-volcanic crisis is consistent with the trans-tensional regime along Comoros archipelago. [Termes IGN] Java (île de)Résumé : (auteur) This article discusses an experiment on the estimation of rubber tree biomass using L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), to support recent efforts to include trees outside forest in global biomass and carbon accounting. We noted that date of acquisition is important, but certainly the selection of allometric equation serving as the reference data was paramount. Similarly, choosing a proper form of fully polarimetric data was instrumental, although this requires validation in different environmental settings. As expected, modern data mining approaches consistently delivered high accuracy. Extreme learning machine yielded the best estimate in terms of R2 (0.98) and RMSE (1.88 Mg/ha); nonetheless, it also delivered a slight negative estimation. In this case, we found that a variant of random forest produced an outcome without any negative estimation. This research suggests that estimated biomass or carbon information from rubber plantations would be an invaluable candidate for the improvement of global biomass data.
