[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Accurate mapping of impervious surface in urban areas is of great demand in environmental and socio-economic studies since impervious surface growth is recognized as an indicator of urbanization. To demonstrate the potential of full polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) in impervious surface detection in different urban areas, this study focused on the exploitation of only SAR data. Three cities with different levels of urbanization – Tehran, Kordkuy, and Arak – have been selected to reduce the effect of input data on achieved results. Advanced Land Observing Satellite/Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (ALOS/PALSAR) images have been classified by support vector machine (SVM) with the help of training data from high-resolution satellite images. Quantitative assessment of classification accuracy revealed that Kordkuy, a not fully developed city (i.e. 84.2%) has the lowest accuracy and Arak, a medium urbanized city, has the highest accuracy (i.e. 90.0%). To further explore the efficiency of full polarimetric SAR, grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) texture of polarized bands has been extracted and put into the classification procedure. The texture information of SAR data provided positive contribution to the impervious surface estimation in three study cases. The improvement is especially noted in dark impervious surface class. All three study areas show an increase of about 6–8% in classification accuracy. The results prove that single use of full polarimetric SAR images holds high potential in identifying impervious surfaces in urban areas. The findings are of great importance in frequent urban impervious surface mapping and monitoring especially in cloud-prone area, where the use of optical data as well as the fusion of optic and SAR data are limited. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) This article proposes an alternative filtering technique to improve interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) time series by reducing residual noise while retaining the ground deformation signal. To this end, for the first time, a data-driven approach is introduced, which is based on Takens’s method within the sequential Monte Carlo framework, allowing for a model-free approach to filter noisy data. Both a Kalman-based filter and a particle filter (PF) are applied within this framework to investigate their impact on retrieving the signals. More specifically, PF and particle smoother [PaSm; to avoid confusion with persistent scatterers (PSs)] are tested for their ability to deal with non-Gaussian noise. A synthetic test based on simulated InSAR time series, as well as a real test, is designed to investigate the capability of the proposed approach compared with the spatiotemporal filtering of InSAR time series. Results indicate that PFs and more specifically PaSm perform better than other applied methods, as indicated by reduced errors in both tests. Two other variants of PF and adaptive unscented Kalman filter (AUKF) are presented and are found to be able to perform similar to PaSm but with reduced computation time. This article suggests that PFs tested here could be applied in InSAR processing chains. [Termes IGN] séismeRésumé : (Auteur) The relation between slip at the near surface and at depth during earthquakes is still not fully resolved at the moment. This deficiency leads to large uncertainties in the evaluation of the magnitude of past earthquakes based on surfaceobservations, which is the only accessible evidence for such events. A better knowledge of the way slip distributes over distinct rupture strands within the first few kilometers from the surface would contribute greatly to reduce these uncertainties. The 30 October 2016 Mw6.5 Norcia earthquake has been captured by a variety of geodetic techniques, which provide access to the slip distribution both at depth and at the ground surface, with an unprecedented level of detail for a normal-faulting earthquake. Wefirst present coseismic surface offset measurements from correlation of optical satellite imagesof sub-metric resolution, which are compared to field observations made shortly after the earthquake. Based on a joint inversion of optical data together withInSAR and GPS data, we then propose a rupture model that explains the observations both at far-field and near-field scales. Finally we explore different rupture geometriesat shallow depth, in an attempt to better explain the near-field deformation (i.e. within the first hundreds of meters around the fault)observed at the surface. Despite the fact that the solution is not unique, several lines of evidence suggest that gravity processes could be locally involved, which interfere with the dominant tectonic processes. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) In this article, a methodology to retrieve the precipitable water vapor (PWV) from a differential interferometric time series is presented. We used external data provided by atmospheric weather models (e.g., ERA-Interim reanalysis) to constrain the initial state and by Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) to phase ambiguities elimination introduced by phase unwrapping algorithm. An iterative least-square is then used to solve the optimization problem. We applied the presented methodology to two time series of differential PWV maps estimated from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired by the Sentinel-1A, over the southwest part of the Appalachian Mountains (USA). The results were validated using an independent GNSS data set and also compared with atmospheric weather prediction data. The GNSS PWV observations show a strong correlation with the estimated PWV maps with a root-mean-square error less than 1 mm. These results are very encouraging, particularly for the meteorology community, providing crucial information to assimilate into numerical weather models and potentially improve the forecasts. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (auteur) This study presents a new method, called the Radial Interpolation Method, to interpolate data characterized by an approximately radial pattern around a relatively constrained central zone, such as the ground deformation patterns shown in many active volcanic areas. The method enables the fast production of short-term deformation maps on the base of spatially sparse ground deformation measurements and can provide uncertainty quantification on the interpolated values, fundamental for hazard assessment purposes and deformation source reconstruction. The presented approach is not dependent on a priori assumptions about the geometry, location and physical properties of the source, except for the requirement of a locally radial pattern, i.e., allowing multiple centers of symmetry. We test the new method on a synthetic point source example, and then, we apply the method to selected time intervals of real geodetic data collected at the Campi Flegrei caldera during the last 39 years, including examples of leveling, Geodetic Precise Traversing measurements and Global Positioning System. The maps of horizontal displacement, calculated inland, show maximum values lying along a semicircular annular region with a radius of about 2–3 km in size. This semi-annular area is marked by mesoscale structures such as faults, sand dikes and fractures. The maps of vertical displacement describe a linear relation between the maximum vertical uplift measured and the volume variation. The multiplicative factor in the linear relation is about 0.3 × 106 m3/cm if we estimate the proportion of the ΔV that is captured by the GPS network onland and we use this to estimate the full ΔV. In this case, the 95% confidence interval on K because of linear regression is ± 5%. Finally, we briefly discuss how the new method could be used for the production of short-term vent opening maps on the base of real-time geodetic measurements of the horizontal and vertical displacements.
