[Termes IGN] précision du positionnementRésumé : (auteur) One of the main geodetic activities is to determine positions of points or objects over the Earth surface or nearby space. Meanwhile when dealing with geodetic observations, a certain Terrestrial Reference System (TRS) has to be adopted in which point positions will be expressed. Since there are many ways to realize the adopted TRS, the most challenging issue is to select the “best” one that preserves the actual quality of geodesy observations. Conversely, noting that the observations are, and should remain, insensitive to the adopted theoretical TRS, they should not be altered by the added pseudo observations (termed as constraints) permitting to specify a Terrestrial Reference Frame (TRF) as the “best” realization of the TRS. In this paper we will focus on the main important parameters needed to define a TRF (called datum definition), as well as the current achievement of Space Geodesy techniques, through the activities related to the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF). The use of minimum constraints approach is emphasized both in case of individual TRS realization by space geodesy techniques and in combination, allowing to precisely define the ITRF datum definition. Some important results of the latest ITRF solution, namely ITRF2000, will be used to illustrate the discussion over two axes: accuracy of the datum definition and the current quality of space geodesy solutions used in the ITRF2000 combination. [Termes IGN] International Terrestrial Reference FrameRésumé : (Auteur) The hierarchy of reference frames used in the IGS and the procedures and rationale for realizing them are reviewed. The Conventions of the IERS lag developments in the IGS in a number of important respects. Recommendations are offered for changes in the IERS Conventions to recognize geocenter motion (as already implemented by the IGS) and to enforce greater model consistency in order to achieve higher precision for combined reference frame products. Despite large improvements in the internal consistency of IGS product sets, defects remain which should be addressed in future developments. If the IGS is to remain a leader in this area, then a comprehensive, long-range strategy should be formulated and pursued to maintain and enhance the IGS reference frame, as well as to improve its delivery to users. Actions should include the official designation of a high-performance reference tracking network whose stations are expected to meet the highest standards possible. [Termes IGN] transformation de coordonnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The usefulness of the densification of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) is to facilitate its access as a global frame by users interested on small (regional or local) networks. Although a regional GPS solution of station positions is usually derived using IGS products (orbits, clocks, ...), which are nominally expressed in the ITRF, its corresponding datum definition could be far from that of ITRF due to mainly the network configuration. The main question to be answered here is how to optimally express station positions of a regional network in the global frame of ITRF? This could be achieved by mainly (1) constraining coordinates of a subset of stations to their ITRF values or (2) aligning the regional solution to ITRF using a transformation formula. This paper will focus on the second method, based on minimum constraints approach, yielding an optimal datum definition together with preserving the original characteristic of the regional solution.
