[Termes IGN] orientation de la TerreRésumé : (auteur) Unlike the past International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) versions where global long-term solutions were combined, the ITRF2005 uses as input data time series (weekly from satellite techniques and 24-h session-wise from Very Long Baseline Interferometry) of station positions and daily Earth Orientation Parameters (EOPs). The advantage of using time series of station positions is that it allows to monitor station non-linear motion and discontinuities and to examine the temporal behavior of the frame physical parameters, namely the origin and the scale. The ITRF2005 origin is defined in such a way that it has zero translations and translation rates with respect to the Earth center of mass, averaged by the Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) time series spanning 13 years of observations. Its scale is defined by nullifying the scale and its rate with respect to the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) time series spanning 26 years of observations. The ITRF2005 orientation (at epoch 2000.0) and its rate are aligned to the ITRF2000 using 70 stations of high geodetic quality. The estimated level of consistency of the ITRF2005 origin (at epoch 2000.0) and its rate with respect to the ITRF2000 is respectively 0.1, 0.8, 5.8 mm and 0.2, 0.1, 1.8 mm/yr along the X, Y and Z-axis. We estimate the formal errors on these components to be 0.3 mm and 0.3 mm/yr. We believe that this low level of agreement between the two frame origins is most probably due to the poor SLR network geometry and its degradation over time. The ITRF2005 combination involving 84 co-location sites revealed a scale inconsistency of 1 ppb (6.3 mm at the equator), at epoch 2000.0, and 0.08 ppb/yr between the SLR and VLBI long-term solutions as obtained by the stacking of their respective time series. Possible causes of this inconsistency may include the poor SLR and VLBI networks and their co-locations, local tie uncertainties, systematic effects and possible inconsistent model corrections used in the data analysis of both techniques. For the first time of the ITRF history, the ITRF2005 rigorous combination provides self-consistent series of EOPs, including Polar Motion from VLBI and satellite techniques and Universal Time and Length of Day from VLBI only. A velocity field of 152 sites with an error less than 1.5 mm/yr is used to estimate absolute rotation poles of 15 tectonic plates that are consistent with the ITRF2005 frame. This new absolute plate motion model supersedes and significantly improves that of the ITRF2000 which involved six major tectonic plates. [Termes IGN] montée du niveau de la merRésumé : (auteur) The problem of correcting the tide gauge records for the vertical land motion upon which the gauges are settled has only been partially solved. At best, the analyses so far have included model corrections for one of the many processes that can affect the land stability, namely the Glacial-Isostatic Adjustment (GIA). An alternative approach is to measure (rather than to model) the rates of vertical land motion at the tide gauges by means of space geodesy. A dedicated GPS processing strategy is implemented to correct the tide gauges records, and thus to obtain a GPS-corrected set of ‘absolute’ or geocentric sea-level trends. The results show a reduced dispersion of the estimated sea-level trends after application of the GPS corrections. They reveal that the reference frame implementation is now achieved within the millimetre accuracy on a weekly basis. Regardless of the application, whether local or global, we have shown that GPS data analysis has reached the maturity to provide useful information to separate land motion from oceanic processes recorded by the tide gauges or to correct these latter. For comparison purposes, we computed the global average of sea-level change according to Douglas [Douglas, B.C., 2001. Sea level change in the era of the recording tide gauge. Int. Geophys. Ser., 75, pp. 37–64.] rules, whose estimate is 1.84 ± 0.35 mm/yr after correction for the GIA effect [Peltier, W.R., 2001. Global glacial isostatic adjustment and modern instrumental records of relative sea level history. Int. Geophys. Ser., 75, pp. 65–95.]. We obtain a value of 1.31 ± 0.30 mm/yr, a value which appears to resolve the ‘sea level enigma’ [Munk, W., 2002. Twentieth century sea level: an enigma. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A., 99(10), pp. 6550–6555]. [Termes IGN] simulation numériqueRésumé : (auteur) Recently, several improvements were made in the DORIS data processing at the IGN/JPL (Institut Geographique National, France; Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, USA) analysis center: use of GRACE-derived gravity fields, data preprocessing and station discontinuity detection, etc. This allowed enhanced performances for ground station geodetic positioning (typically 10 mm using a week of data), as well as for polar motion (0.5–1.0 mass for daily determination). However, since the loss in 2004 of the DORIS receiver on the TOPEX/Poseidon mission, only four satellites (SPOT-2, SPOT-4, SPOT-5, and ENVISAT) are currently equipped with DORIS receivers. Furthermore, most of them are aging and some have already far exceeded their expected lifetime. The goal of this paper is to analyze how the geodetic performances could be degraded in the future if one or more of these satellites would unfortunately be lost, and to envisage which satellites are currently the most critical in the DORIS geodetic performances. We have reanalyzed 1 year of recent DORIS data (2005), processing all possible combinations of satellite constellation sub-sets. We then compared these results (station coordinates and polar motion) with those obtained in regular data processing when using DORIS data from all four available satellites in 2005. We demonstrate the importance of the SPOT-5 data, equipped with a new type of on-board DORIS receiver. The study also shows some possible weaknesses in our current ENVISAT orbit computations. Fortunately, new DORIS satellites are also expected in the near future (Jason-2, CRYOSAT-2 and AltiKa), which could improve current DORIS-derived geodetic results due to their specific type of orbit (different from the SPOT sun-synchronous orbits) and also to enhanced on-board receivers. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) We analyzed 1 year of DORIS data to estimate daily corrections to the mean locations of the satellite antenna phase centers. For each DORIS satellite, we looked for possible biases, discontinuities, trends or annual signals. All SPOT satellites show very similar patterns, which are characterized by a significant constant bias of about 20 mm in the cross-track direction as well as a clear annual signal of 5 mm amplitude. All DORIS satellites show a consistent systematic radial offset of 10–20 mm (equivalent to 1.5–3.0 ppb in the Terrestrial Reference Frame) when using ITRF2000 and less than 1 ppb using ITRF2005P. A discontinuity unexpectedly appears in DORIS radial antenna phase center offset of the ENVISAT satellite on October 12, 2004, at the time of a flight software switch. GPS phase center offsets were also computed for Jason and TOPEX/Poseidon and no significant differences were found between DORIS and GPS estimations. Finally, we applied these estimated DORIS satellite antenna phase center offsets to derive weekly time series of station coordinates in 2004. Results showed very small improvement for station coordinates and confirmed that DORIS scale could match ITRF2000 scale by modifying the vector between the center of mass of the satellite and the phase center of the on-board antenna with a proper radial offset. At this point, we do not recommend the adoption of any empirical DORIS satellite phase center offsets at this point.
