[Termes IGN] société de l'informationRésumé : (Auteur) This article presents the Varenius perspective on the societal dimensions of geographical information technologies and the geographical dimensions of information technologies in general, and puts them in the context of the research literature of the last ten years. The central themes examined are : theoretical perspectives on the societal implications of geographical information technologies ; the changing significance of key geographical concepts in the information age ; and societal aspects of the practical application of geographical information technologies. The relationships between these themes and three NCGIA Varenius research initiatives on geographies of the information society are summarized, and some directions for future research in this broad area are outlined. [Termes IGN] tempsRésumé : (Auteur) In an increasingly complex and interactive world, the need to study, manage, and understand the critical interface between physical and human environments is becoming more urgent, precipitating technological advancements in the dynamic spatiotemporal capabilities of geographic information systems (GIS) and associated visualization and representational techniques. Such efforts require a thorough knowledge of the intrinsic characteristics associated with changes in space and time. A comprehensive understanding of the underlying dynamic structure associated with movement is necessary before accurate, integrative, and insightful analyses, explanations, and representations of complex, geographically dynamic phenomena can be performed. Using the logical subdivision method of classification, geographic movement is conceptualized by its abstract spatial and temporal components creating a matrix of 12 unique classes characterizing the form of movement. The organization is a simplified framework that offers a movement language with which to describe the movements associated with diverse geographic phenomena. Classifying geographic movement by its changes in time and space serves as a useful construct that facilitates the comprehension of the general ideas and principles intrinsic to geographical patterns and processes and provides a solid foundation for representing and understanding complex geographic phenomena. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper explores the potential of the geographic metaphor in helping generate systematic, flexible, and powerful visualizations of textual information. It is part of a larger project aiming at the development of a general spatialization framework for complex nonspatial information. The focus here is on two fundamental questions: first, what is the cognitive rationale for applying the geographic metaphor to nonspatial information; and second, what may be the significance of basic geographic concepts such as place, way, and region within information spaces represented as geographic landscapes. Following a discussion of information spaces in general, the paper examines the notions of situated and embedded cognition, and some principles for the design of spatializations deriving from these. The next section considers the potential meanings, uses, and presentation modes of the geographic concepts of place, way, and region within a spatialized representation of (textual) information. The final discussion and conclusions point towards an informal research agenda for further work in that area.
