The described model is capable of dealing with rough uncertainty as well as fuzzy uncertainty associated with the classification of multispectral images. The concept of weak fuzzy similarity relation is used for generation of fuzzy equivalence classes during the calculation of rough-fuzzy membership function. The model allows efficient modelling of indiscernibility and fuzziness between patterns by appropriate weights being assigned using the back-propagated errors depending upon the rough-fuzzy membership values at the corresponding outputs. The effectiveness of the proposed model is demonstrated on classification problem of IRS-P6 LISS IV image of Allahabad area. The results are compared with statistical (minimum distance to means), conventional Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and Fuzzy Multi-Layer Perceptron (FMLP) models. The better overall accuracy, user's and producer's accuracies and kappa coefficient of the proposed classifier in comparison to other considered models demonstrate the effectiveness of this model in multispectral image classification. [Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (Auteur) This paper explores the necessity of using spatial-temporal specific neighbourhood rules for simulation of urban dynamics at a regional level with the help of a Cellular Automata (CA) land-use model (Environment Explorer). Moreover, it explores a method for formulating these spatial-temporal specific neighbourhood rules. Therein, spatial metrics originating from the field of landscape ecology prove to be very useful, in particular the so-called enrichment factor. Analysis of historical data with the help of these spatial metrics revealed evidence of substantial differences in land-use developments between time periods and regions, for example, differences that should be incorporated in land-use models if applied on a more detailed regional scale. In a case study, micro-scale land-use data incorporated in a CA-model were used to analyse and simulate the urban morphological changes over two time periods in four urban regions in the Netherlands. In this study, regional and time-specific neighbourhood rules performed significantly better than a set of generic neighbourhood rules. In contrast, within current practice, most CA land-use modelling makes use of only one uniform set of neighbourhood rules for performing both large area and regional scale land-use simulations. This study questions this common practice and puts it into perspective. Moreover, it indicates some restrictions in the proposed regionalization of the neighbourhood rules; one which is particularly noteworthy is its time-specific dependency of local developments and circum--stances. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, a variogram-based texture analysis was tested for classifying detailed urban land-use classes, such as mobile home, single-family house, multi-family house, industrial, and commercial from a digital color infrared aerial photograph. Spectral classification was first carried out to separate the building class from non-building classes. Then, a building-presence binary image was generated so that building pixels were assigned a value of "1 " and non-building pixels were assigned a value of "0. " Multiple texture bands were further generated employing a variogram-based texture analysis and used for land-use classification. The generation of the building presence binary image allowed us not only to fully explore the capability of variogram-based analysis on spatial pattern detection, but also to prevent the variogram-based analysis from being disturbed by the natural fluctuation of spectral signals. The result from using a mosaic test image was considered satisfactory with a kappa coefficient of 0.72. [Termes IGN] varianceRésumé : (Auteur) The z-test based on the Kappa statistic is commonly used to infer superiority of one map production method over another. Typically the same reference data set is used to calculate and next compare the Kappa's of the two maps. This data structure easily leads to dependence between the two error-matrices. This may result in overly large variance estimates and too conservative inference about the difference in accuracy between the two methods. Tests considering the dependency between the error matrices would be more sensitive in such case. In this article we compare the performance of two such tests, a randomization and McNemar's test, with the traditional z-test. We compared 16 alternative methods to classify salt marsh vegetation in The Netherlands. The error matrices were positively associated in all 120 possible comparisons of pairs of classification methods. This suggests that dependency between pairs of error matrices used in classifier comparison is a common phenomenon. Both the randomization and McNemar test gave lower p values and rejecied the null hypothesis of equal performance more frequently than the z-test. We therefore recommend considering their use.
