[Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (auteur) Habitat-type land cover on Horn Island, Mississippi, northern Gulf of Mexico, was estimated for the years 1940 and 2010 using a combination of panchromatic imagery and 2010 ground survey data. A grey-level co-occurrence matrix was applied to compute reflectance coefficient of variation (CV) and texture indices. The relationships of 2010 CV ranges with known habitat types defined training regions of interest in the 1940 imagery as a substitute for 1940 ground data. Texture indices contrast, correlation, energy and entropy then served as input bands for maximum likelihood classifications which produced 1940 and 2010 habitat maps. Analysis determined that wetter habitats on Horn expanded linearly over the seven-decade period. This is attributed to constraints on sediment supply and the impacts of severe storms which led to decreases in soil depth to the water table. If this trend continues, marsh habitat will cover 31% of Horn Island’s land area by 2050. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Alnus glutinosa (alder) swamp woodlands are in danger of disappearing in Europe and, in Norway, several habitats with alder are threatened. Knowledge about the dynamics of alder swamp woodlands is crucial for the conservation and management of this vegetation. Our studied site, Rambjøra, in western Norway encompasses the Rambjøra Landscape Protected Area. We combined information from three sources—recent alder swamp woodland ecology, vegetation history, and agricultural history—to reveal the long-term vegetation dynamics of Rambjøra in relation to land-use. Dynamic changes in the predominance of forest or semi-natural grassland over 2800 years, concurrent with varying anthropogenic disturbances are inferred. At the investigated site, alder swamp woodland developed after forest clearance and changes in the water balance. The abundance of alder swamp woodlands have varied through time, increasing with low-impact land-use and declining with intensified use or abandonment. The highest biodiversity is found in periods with grazing, hay mowing, and probably fodder and fire wood collection. This indicates that agricultural practices of moderate intensity (grazing and hay cutting) should be part of the future management in order to maintain the biodiversity and meet the objective of the protection of Rambjøra. The study demonstrates the advantages of combining vegetation surveys, pollen records, and land-use history to provide a long-term perspective on vegetation development, and in our case also as an aid when establishing conservation strategies. Our findings need to be considered in future conservation and restoration of ecosystems with alder swamp woodlands. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Introduction) In wetlands, hydrological regimes determine values of functions and ecosystem services. If hydrological regimes of wetlands are now widely handled by environmental managers, its impacts on both floods and vegetation dynamics are still unexplored. Simultaneously, the new Earth observation Sentinel-1 constellation, allowing all weather radar acquisitions with high temporal and spatial resolution appears as a promising opportunity for the monitoring of wetlands. In the same time, this study aims at (i) evaluating the ability of a Sentinel-1 time for the detection and monitoring of flood areas at 1:50 000 scale across a 100 000 hectares marsh; (ii) exploring the relation between the hydrological dynamic and ecological processes. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (auteur) Mapping vegetation formations at a fine scale is crucial for assessing wetland functions and for better landscape management. Identification and characterization of vegetation formations is generally conducted at a fine scale using ecological ground surveys, which are limited to small areas. While optical remotely sensed imagery is limited to cloud-free periods, SAR time-series are used more extensively for wetland mapping and characterization using the relationship between distribution of vegetation formations and flood duration. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal number and key dates of SAR images to be classified to map wetland vegetation formations at a 1:10,000 scale. A series of eight dual-polarization TerraSAR-X images (HH/VV) was acquired in 2013 during dry and wet seasons in temperate climate conditions. One polarimetric parameter was extracted first, the Shannon entropy, which varies with wetland flooding status and vegetation roughness. Classification runs of all the possible combinations of SAR images using different k (number of images) subsets were performed to determine the best combinations of the Shannon entropy images to identify wetland vegetation formations. The classification runs were performed using Support Vector Machine techniques and were then analyzed using the McNemar test to investigate significant differences in the accuracy of all classification runs based on the different image subsets. The results highlight the relevant periods (i.e. late winter, spring and beginning of summer) for mapping vegetation formations, in accordance with ecological studies. They also indicate that a relationship can be established between vegetation formations and hydrodynamic processes with a short time-series of satellite images (i.e. 5 dates). This study introduces a new approach for herbaceous wetland monitoring using SAR polarimetric imagery. This approach estimates the number and key dates required for wetland management (e.g. restoration) and biodiversity studies using remote sensing data.
