[Termes descripteurs IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) This paper analyses and maps the spatial distribution of soil moisture using remote sensing: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and Landsat-Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) images. The study was carried out in the central Ebro river valley (northeast Spain), and examines the spatial relationships between the distribution of soil moisture and several meteorological and geographical variables following a long, intense dry period (winter 2000). Soil moisture estimates were obtained using thermal, visible and near-infrared data and by applying the 'triangle method', which describes relationships between surface temperature (Ts) and fractional vegetation cover (Fr). Low differences were found between the soil moisture estimates obtained using AVHRR and ETM+ sensors. Soil moisture estimated using remote sensing is close to estimations obtained from climate indices. This fact, and the high similarity between estimations of both sensors, suggests the reasonable reliability of soil moisture remote sensing estimations. Moreover, in estimations from both sensors the spatial distribution of soil moisture was largely accounted for by meteorological variables, mainly precipitation in the dry period. The results indicate the high reliability of remote sensing for determining areas affected by water deficits and for quantifying drought intensity. [Termes descripteurs IGN] Pays-BasRésumé : (Auteur) The Westerschelde estuary is the only major uncontrolled estuary in the south of The Netherlands. More than 15000 ships per year use it to access the Belgian port of Antwerp. A major dredging operation along the Westerschelde in the late 1990s has changed the tidal regime and increased tidal inundation of the salt marshes at high tide. Airborne remote sensing (CASI) has been acquired in 1998 and 2000 for three salt marsh sites in the Westerschelde estuary. An additional dataset exists for one site for 1993. The CASI data have been classified into maps of salt marsh vegetation. These provide an input for GIS-based modelling of sediment erosion/accretion. Maps of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values allow change detection: successional change of salt marsh vegetation is clearly demonstrated. The 1993, 1998 and 2000 data show a successional trend between 1993 and 1998 that is, in part, reversing between 1998 and 2000. Data also showed significant erosion of the salt marsh edge. Data are being used to extrapolate field measurements and help produce sediment budgets for the individual salt marshes. Nonetheless, many features indicative of incipient marsh loss, such as widening of tidal creeks and formation of small ponds, are often not readily detectable at the nominal 30 a x 30 m resolution of Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery, the general source for conventional satellite sensor-based data on wetlands. Spectral mixture modelling, where the proportional representation of land cover types can be estimated within pixels, offers a potential solution to the problem of assessing initial indications of loss in coastal marshes. Nevertheless, the simple linear mixture models most commonly employed can be subject to significant errors when applied to marshes due to the considerable variety of soil/sediment types in these environments. A new method is presented here which not only successfully reduces the spectral variability of soils, but also in the other principal components of vegetation and water, to a three-endmember model for estimating their fractional representation in TM data. Fractional representations for these variables in this method yield more reliable results than those obtained from unmixing corrected reflectance data. Though unmixing individual scenes may still be best achieved by extensive ground-referencing and image analysis, this technique is a robust approach for large-scale, semi-automated processing of many scenes in investigations of marsh surface condition. The Survey Department (Meetkundige Dienst) produces vegetation maps using aerial photographs. However, it is a time-consuming and expensive activity. The accuracy of the conventional vegetation map derived using aerial photograph interpretation (API) is estimated to be around 43 percent. In this study, an alternative method is demonstrated that uses an expert system to combine airborne hyperspectral imagery with terrain data derived from radar altimetry The accuracy of the vegetation map generated by the expert system increased to 66 percent. When hyperspectral imagery alone was used to classify coastal wetlands, an accuracy of 40 percent was achieved-comparable to the accuracy of the API-derived vegetation map. An analysis of the efficiency of the proposed expert system showed that the speed of map production is increased by using the new method. This means that digital image classification using the expert system is an objective and repeatable method superior to the conventional API method. [Termes descripteurs IGN] réflectance végétaleRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we compare the classification effectiveness of two relatively new techniques on data consisting of leaf-level reflectance from five species of salt marsh and two species of crop plants (in four experiments) that have been exposed to varying levels of different heavy metal or petroleum toxicity, with a control treatment for each experiment. If these methodologies work well on leaf-level data, then there is hope that they will also work well on data from air- and spaceborne platforms. The classification methods compared were support vector classification (SVC) of exposed and nonexposed plants based on the spectral reflectance data, and partial least squares compression of the spectral reflectance data followed by classification using logistic discrimination (PLSALD). The statistic we used to compare the effectiveness of the methodologies was the leave-one-out cross-validation estimate of the prediction error. Our results suggest that both techniques perform reasonably well, but that SVC was superior to PLS/LD for use on hyperspectral data and it is worth exploring as a technique for classifying heavy-metal or petroleum exposed plants for the more complicated data from airand spaceborne sensors.
