[Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) Knowledge of offset vectors from vessel mounted sonars, to systems such as Inertial Measurement Units and Global Navigation Satellite Systems is crucial for accurate ocean mapping applications. Traditional survey methods, such as employing laser scanners or total stations, are used to determine professional vessel offset distances reliably. However, for vessels of opportunity that are collecting volunteer bathymetric data, it is beneficial to consider survey methods that may be less time consuming, less expensive, or which do not involve bringing the vessel into a dry dock. Thus, this article explores two alternative methods that meet this criterion for horizontally calibrating vessels. Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) were used to horizontally calibrate a vessel with both Structure from Motion photogrammetry and aerial lidar while the vessel was moored to a floating dock. Estimates of the horizontal deviations from ground truth, were obtained by comparing the horizontal distances between targets on a vessel, acquired by the UAS methods, to multiple ground truth sources: a survey-grade terrestrial laser scan and fiberglass tape measurements. The investigated methods were able to achieve horizontal deviations on the order of centimeters with the use of Ground Control Points. [Termes IGN] vitesseRésumé : (auteur) When surveying through a water surface, a distortion of several centimetres caused by the refraction and the change in the velocity of the electromagnetic waves can be observed. Therefore, neither the position nor the height of an underwater point (object), which can be seen from above the water surface, is correctly measured. The authors want to point out the magnitude of geometric errors when measuring to points under water as well as the computation of correct under water positions of points from measurement through a water layer. A practical experiment was performed for a water depth of 0.16 m. An innovative method was developed in order to classify automatically the radial wind speed patterns visible on the quasi-horizontal lidar scans, based on texture analysis parameters and supervised machine learning algorithms. A 150-case training ensemble was built using ancillary data (satellite pictures and weather observations) to ascertain the manual classification into four types: rolls, thermals, streaks and “others”. The performance of the classification process was assessed on the training ensemble using the 10-fold cross-validation method. A very satisfying 9% error was obtained for the Quadratic Discriminant Analysis algorithm, using only 5 texture analysis parameters classifiers. This process was then applied to classify the whole dataset (4577 lidar scans) and the results showed that the classified structures respected a plausible diurnal cycle and were associated with the meteorological parameters as expected by the theoretical knowledge. The size of the coherent structures in the direction transverse to the mean wind were estimated from the wind spectrums on a four-day case study. They ranged from 400 to 800 m for the cases classified as streaks, and from 1.3 to 2.0 km for the cases classified as rolls. These results pave the way for future long-term studies providing statistical insight on the frequency of occurrence of the different structure types, their physical properties, and their impact on pollutants’ concentrations. [Termes IGN] temps de volIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) Misuse of civil drones, or UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) has been a rising concern in the past few years. As a response, multiple systems including optics, electronics and even acoustics technologies have been developed for detection and tracking. Unfortunately, UAVs represent a challenging target to detect and track due to their small, decimetric size and large variability of shapes and behaviors. In this PhD, we developed and optimized a LiDAR (light detection and ranging) system to tackle this issue to distances up to a kilometer. In our system, range is acquired using the time of flight principle, and imagery done by sequentially scanning the scene with a dual-axis galvanometer. We took advantage of the scanning versatility to develop several operating modes. A standard detection mode captures the image of the scene using a raster-scan of large field of view. Tracking mode is based on a local pattern surrounding the target, which is updated at a very high rate to keep the target within its boundaries. Efforts were put into a theoretical and numerical optimization study of the numerous parameters involved in our scanning LiDAR, so as to reach sufficient performances in term of maximal range, localization resolution and rate. Pattern optimization for both detection and tracking mode was a primary focus, using the target probability of detection as the function to maximize. Target size, speed and reflectivity was also introduced in the probability of detection, giving a complete overview of the system performance. On our LiDAR platform, developed from the ground up, each component was characterized to enrich and validate our models. This prototype was tested for UAVs detection and tracking during several weeks of trials. Following this success, a pre-industrial integration process was launched and supervised by the candidate.
