[Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (éditeur) In geodesy and geoinformation science, as well as in many other technical disciplines, it is often not possible to directly determine the desired target quantities. Therefore, the unknown parameters must be linked with the measured values by a mathematical model which consists of the functional and the stochastic models. The functional model describes the geometrical–physical relationship between the measurements and the unknown parameters. This relationship is sufficiently well known for most applications. With regard to the stochastic model, two problem domains of fundamental importance arise: 1. How can stochastic models be set up as realistically as possible for the various geodetic observation methods and sensor systems? 2. How can the stochastic information be adequately considered in appropriate least squares adjustment models? Further questions include the interpretation of the stochastic properties of the computed target values with regard to precision and reliability and the use of the results for the detection of outliers in the input data (measurements). In this Special Issue, current research results on these general questions are presented in ten peer-reviewed articles. The basic findings can be applied to all technical scientific fields where measurements are used for the determination of parameters to describe geometric or physical phenomena. Durant dix semaines, on m'a confié diverses tâches à accomplir autour de relevés topométriques, topographiques et lasergrammétriques. J’ai travaillé avec diverses méthodes d’acquisitions laser et j’ai appliqué différentes méthodes de traitement. Je me suis déplacé sur plusieurs chantiers pour effectuer des relevés et les traiter ensuite via de multiples logiciels. J’ai pu mettre en pratique des connaissances acquises à l’ENSG, telles que le calcul d’une polygonale pour une gare, le relevé et le traitement de nuage de points, ou la méthode de positionnement d’une station pour acquérir un objet dans sa globalité. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (auteur) Over the last decade, particular interest in using state-of-the-art emerging technologies for inspection, assessment, and management of civil infrastructures has remarkably increased. Advanced technologies, such as laser scanners, have become a suitable alternative for labor intensive, expensive, and unsafe traditional inspection and maintenance methods, which encourage the increasing use of this technology in construction industry, especially in bridges. This paper aims to provide a thorough mixed scientometric and state-of-the-art review on the application of terrestrial laser scanners (TLS) in bridge engineering and explore investigations and recommendations of researchers in this area. Following the review, more than 1500 research publications were collected, investigated and analyzed through a two-fold literature search published within the last decade from 2010 to 2020. Research trends, consisting of dominated sub-fields, co-occurrence of keywords, network of researchers and their institutions, along with the interaction of research networks, were quantitatively analyzed. Moreover, based on the collected papers, application of TLS in bridge engineering and asset management was reviewed according to four categories including (1) generation of 3D model, (2) quality inspection, (3) structural assessment, and (4) bridge information modeling (BrIM). Finally, the paper identifies the current research gaps, future directions obtained from the quantitative analysis, and in-depth discussions of the collected papers in this area. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) Tree height is one of the most important tree attributes in forest inventory. However, using conventional field methods to measure tree height is a laborious and time-consuming process. Despite the great interest in the past to facilitate tree height measurements, new, upcoming solutions are not yet thoroughly investigated. In this study, we investigated the applicability of different close-range remote sensing options for tree height measurement in a complex lowland deciduous forest. Six sample plots in a pedunculate oak forest were measured in detail using conventional methods. Close-range remote sensing datasets used in this study represent solutions from low-cost sensors used for hand-held personal laser scanning (PLShh), unmanned–borne laser scanning (ULS) and unmanned aerial vehicle photogrammetry (UAVimage). Each tree in the sample plots was interactively measured directly from the point cloud, and correspondence of the field- and remote sensing measured trees was verified using tree positions collected during fieldwork. Cross-comparisons of different datasets were performed to evaluate the performances of different data sources in the tree height estimation with respect to crown class, tree height and species. All remote sensing data sources correlated well, e.g. biases between remote sensing sources were around ± 1%. The field-measured tree height in general correlated well with remote sensing data sources. The uncertainties and bias of the field measurements were dependent on the tree height and crown class. Field measurements tended to underestimate codominant and intermediate trees at the approximately 1 m magnitude, whilst remote sensing data sources were robust to crown classes. Low-cost ULS used in this study, and very likely in general, may not have enough penetration capability when measuring low and mostly occluded trees, causing missed treetops. PLShh gave tree height estimates closer to the real tree height than those derived from conventional field measurements for trees above 21 m height. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (auteur) The emerging single-photon laser scanning has made technological breakthrough in the collection of airborne laser scanning data. In principle, single-photon systems require only one detected photon for successful ranging. Further, the point density on the ground can be 10–100 times higher for single-photon lidar data than that obtained with multi-photon systems at the same flight altitude. This has great potential to reduce operation costs. Single-photon lidar technology is assumed to be the best for data acquisition when high point densities are required over very large areas, or when improvements in measurement rates can significantly reduce data acquisition costs, such as in nationwide laser scanning programmes, where the whole country is repeatedly covered with data every 5–10 years. This study investigates single-photon lidar and conventional multi-photon laser scanning data for their potential in characterizing ground and forest attributes. Performance is evaluated in a boreal forest by a comparative analysis, where single-photon lidar measurements with SPL100 (Leica/Hexagon) from two flight heights (1900 m and 3800 m) are compared with data from the Optech Titan (400 m) multi-photon airborne laser scanning (ALS) under summer conditions (i.e. leaves on). We found that SPL100 from both altitudes provides forest attribute estimates with comparable accuracy to that of Optech Titan from 400 m using an area-based method. This demonstrates that point density and flight altitude do not have significant impact on forest attribute estimation using the area-based approach. As a result, SPL100 is a cost-efficient alternative to a conventional laser scanner for forest inventories at large scale. There are systematic differences in behavior of the data sets due to differences in ranging sensitivity, beam size, and point density. We observed a higher proportion of ground returns in the SPL100 (3800 m) than in SPL100 (1900 m) data. Both SPL100 data in general produced a higher proportion of ground returns than Titan single channel did in structurally more homogeneous and one layer stands while higher proportion of ground returns from Titan than from SPL100 data in multi-layer stands. Forest structure and flight altitude has a notable impact on the distribution of points and further characteristics of the vertical structures. The pulse of Titan sensor penetrated deeper into the canopy than SPL100.
