[Termes IGN] programmation par contraintesRésumé : (auteur) Cartographic generalization seeks to summarize geographical information from a geo-database to produce a less detailed and readable map. The specifications of a legible map are translated into a set of constraints to guide the generalization process and evaluate it. The global evaluation of the map, or of a part of it, consisting in aggregating all the single constraints satisfactions, is still to tackle for the generalization community. This paper deals with the use of the social welfare theory to handle the aggregation of the single satisfactions on the map level. The social welfare theory deals with the evaluation of the economical global welfare of a society, based on the individual welfare. Different social welfare orderings are adapted to generalization, compared and some are chosen for several generalization use cases. Experiments with topographic maps are carried out to validate the choices. [Termes IGN] spécification de contenuRésumé : (Auteur) Paper maps are generally planned for use under normal circumstances. One of the exceptions is orienteering maps, which are used in special circumstances, namely, at sport events such as running, when poor visibility and bad weather conditions may considerably reduce the legibility. When the drawing specifications of orienteering maps were created and when later new forms and disciplines of orienteering events were invented, the clear legibility of printed maps was one of the most important aspects. The International Orienteering Federation keeps the aim of preserving the characteristics of the different event and discipline formats by ensuring the legibility of the event maps. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) The generation of maps in real-time web-services introduces challenges concerning map legibility. As these services lack the important input of a traditional cartographer, analytical measures of the legibility are called for. The aim of this study was to develop such legibility measures, and to evaluate them with the help of expert users. Measures of the amount of information, spatial distribution and object complexity were developed and evaluated. The results indicated that some of the measures could be used to describe map legibility. [Termes IGN] lisibilité perceptiveRésumé : (Auteur) Users need maps which fit their specific work context. [...] In this context, one important issue is to define a semiautomatic tool that will improve the graphic properties of maps, with a particular focus on readability. [...] The separation of data and their representation, when the user is free to select data and to build his/her own map, can leads to errors. In particular, semiotic errors and errors about conventional use of colors are brought out. These errors are due to lack of cartographical knowledge which optimizes the symbolization of data on a map. [...] In this paper we present a process for improving visual rendering based on an index system described below. There are three steps to this process: indices calculation, readability evaluation and intervention on the map.
