[Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (auteur) Automated coastline extraction from optical satellites is fundamental to coastal mapping, and sea-land segmentation is the core technology of coastline extraction. Deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) have performed well in semantic segmentation in recent years. However, sea-land segmentation using deep learning techniques remains a challenging task, due to the lack of a benchmark dataset and the difficulty of deciding which semantic segmentation model to use. We present a comparative framework of sea-land segmentation to Landsat-8 OLI imagery via semantic segmentation in deep learning techniques. Three issues are investigated: (1) constructing a sea-land benchmark dataset using Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) imagery consisting of 18,000 km2 of coastline around China; (2) evaluating the feasibility and performance of sea-land segmentation by comparing the accuracy assessment, time complexity, spatial complexity and stability of state-of-the-art DCNNs methods; (3) choosing the most suitable semantic segmentation model for sea-land segmentation in accordance with Akaike information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian information criterion (BIC) model selection. Results show that the average test accuracy achieves over 99% accuracy, and the mean Intersection over Unions (mean IoU) is above 92%. These findings demonstrate that the Fully Convolutional DenseNet (FC-enseNet) performs better than other state-of-the-art methods in sea-land segmentation, based on both AIC and BIC. Considering training time efficiency, DeeplabV3+ performs better for sea-land segmentation. [Termes IGN] varianceRésumé : (auteur) Although ridge tracing has the advantages of continuity and high positioning accuracy compared with other edge-based methods, it is difficult to use ridge tracing to extract coastlines from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images because of the speckle noise that occurs in SAR images. This paper presents a new coastline extraction method for SAR images based on a more robust ridge tracing method. First, according to the statistical properties of the pixel intensities in the land and sea regions in a SAR image, an edge magnitude map that characterizes the boundary between them is produced by the ratio of the variance to the mean such that the magnitude at the land-sea boundary is much higher than that at other locations. Second, the pixel with the maximum magnitude in the map is adopted as the starting point for tracing, and strip windows, which reduce tracing failures, are adopted to obtain different average magnitudes corresponding to the eight neighborhood pixels around the starting point. Then, the neighborhood pixel with the maximum magnitude is adopted as the next tracing point. The above procedure is repeated to determine the direction of the next point. This process achieves part of the tracing operation. The complete coastline is then extracted by performing the other part of the tracing operation. The experimental results show that the proposed method is more robust than traditional methods, and we demonstrate its effectiveness with RADARSAT-2 and Sentinel-1A data. [Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (éditeur) The authors have developed models for predicting beach changes applicable to various problems on real coasts. One of them is the contour-line-change model to predict long-term beach changes caused by the imbalance in longshore sand transport, which is a kind of N-line model. Because the calculation of the nearshore current is not needed in this model, and the computational load is small, it has an advantage in the prediction of long-term topographic changes on an extensive coast. However, the handling of boundary conditions becomes difficult when offshore coastal structures are constructed in a complicated manner, and in this regard the so-called 3D model has an advantage. Taking this point into account, the authors developed a morphodynamic model (BG model) by applying the concept of the equilibrium slope and the energetics approach, in which depth changes on 2D horizontal grids are calculated.
