[Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (Auteur) Distances from points to closest shorelines in a given direction are used, for example, in some models for estimating wave exposure. Such distances, also called fetch lengths, can be determined using standard geographic information systems. However, performance may be a problem if these distances are required for a great number of study points. Two new algorithms for determining fetch lengths for study points in the same directions are presented in this paper. It is assumed that the two-dimensional map is stored in vector format, i.e. shorelines of islands and mainland are stored as polygons. The first algorithm works on a set of undirected line segments derived from the shoreline polygons. The other works on a raster representation of the map. The algorithm saves memory by postponing the rasterisation until necessary. Both of the new algorithms have superior efficiency to a previously reported algorithm when the number of study points is large. [Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (Auteur) Coastal mapping, using various data capture and feature extraction techniques, has furthered understanding of trends in shoreline evolution by allowing calculation of accurate historic rates of change that subsequently enable the prediction of future shoreline positions through different modelling procedures. The results have helped influence coastal policy formulation and promoted the development of sustainable management practices in coastal regions throughout the developed world. However, sustainable coastal management is rarely practiced in developing countries, one of the fundamental reasons for this being a general lack of reliable and accurate historic data on shoreline position. Previous studies on the Ghanaian coastal region of Accra, where accurate and reliable geospatial data for analysis is scarce, have reported erosion rates of anything between two and eight metres per year. This high level of inconsistency in reported rates has hindered effective and sustainable coastal management. The research reported in this paper addresses this issue, using mapping data from 1904, 1974, 1996 and 2002 to estimate, by linear regression, shoreline recession in the Accra region. Predictions for the next 250 yr were then undertaken using a variety of techniques ranging from a process-based numerical model, SCAPE, to geometric approaches including historical trend analysis, the modified Bruun model and Sunamura’s shore platform model. Uncertainties in the various input data were accounted for, including historic recession rates, rock strength, sediment content and, importantly, future sea-level rise under different climate change scenarios. The mean historic rate of erosion in the Accra region was found to be 1.13 m/yr(10.17 m/yr), significantly less than previously reported, though still very high. Subsequent predictions were used to identify a series of significant economic, ecological and social features at risk, and to estimate when they will most likely be lost to erosion if left unprotected. The case study illustrates that, provided suitable predictive models are selected and the uncertainties involved in working with limited data sets are dealt with appropriately, it is possible to provide statistical information in support of sustainable coastal management for developing countries in the face of a changing climate. [Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (Auteur) This paper investigates the geopositioning accuracy achievable from integrating IKONOS and QuickBird satellite stereo image pairs with aerial images acquired over a region at Tampa Bay, Florida. The results showed that the accuracy is related to a few factors of imaging geometry. For example, the geopositioning accuracy of a stereo pair of IKONOS or QuickBird images can be improved by integrating a set of aerial images, even just a single aerial image or a stereo pair of aerial images. Shorelines derived from the IKONOS and QuickBird stereo images, particularly the vertical positions, are compared with the corresponding observations of water-penetrating LiDAR and water gauge stations and proved that differences are within the limit of the geopositioning uncertainty of the satellite images. [Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (Auteur) An edge extraction model has been developed that uses multitemporal satellite synthetic aperture radar data to delineate shorelines in estuaries. Using Japanese ALOS PALSAR HH data acquired in December 2006 and JERS-1 L-HH SAR data in December 1994, we mapped shorelines of the outer Pamlico Peninsula, Dare County, North Carolina, USA, spanning 12 years. To assess the validity and accuracy of the delineation, we compared (a) 1994 shorelines versus those derived from the 1993 digital orthophotographs, and (b) 2006 shorelines versus field data collected in February 2007. With promising results, we then analysed and quantified the shoreline changes between 1994 and 2006 on the north, east, and south sides of the Peninsula. Virtually no discernible changes on the north and south sides were found. However, significant landward migration in the middle to southern portion on the east shore was observed. Spatial retreat of shorelines varied greatly, with the maximum rate averaged over a span of 12 years exceeding 11 m year?-1? The results support further monitoring of shorelines in estuaries using active remote sensing and the potential for the methodology developed to identify erosional hotspots. [Termes IGN] tsunamiRésumé : (Auteur) The Sumatra earthquake struck South Asia on 26 December 2004 and triggered monstrous waves that turned into a tsunami hitting the ocean regions and caused the most severe natural disaster of recent decades. The devastating earthquake and tsunami changed the landscape of coastal areas in many countries around the whole Indian Ocean region. To provide real-time information for rescue and rehabilitation plans, satellite images were applied to monitor and evaluate the damage over several devastated spots. The FORMOSAT-2 satellite, which was launched on 21 May 2004 and operated by the National Space Organization, Taiwan, is uniquely designed to take timely and low-cost black and white images daily with a resolution of 2 m and colour images of 8-m resolution. FORMOSAT-2 is expected to have many useful applications, such as natural-disaster evaluation, land-usage analysis, environmental monitoring, and coastal search and rescue. FORMOSAT-2 successfully acquired several post-tsunami images of the hazardous areas, both Puhket, Thailand and Banda Aceh, Indonesia on 28 December. A series of FORMOSAT-2 satellite images were processed by geometric and radiometric correction, haze reduction, image enhancement, feature extraction, image classification, and image fusion to assess the damage over those devastated areas. FORMOSAT-2 satellite images with a high-temporal resolution and high-spatial resolution were proved to be an efficient and useful information source for decision-makers to make rescue and recovery plans, especially for some isolated islands hard to reach in time.
