[Termes IGN] traitement d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The manual delineation of vegetation patches or forest stands is a costly and crucial stage in any land-cover mapping project or forest inventory based upon photointerpretation. Recent computer techniques have eased the task of the interpreter; however, a good deal of craftsmanship is still required in the delineation. In an effort to contribute to the automation of this process, we introduce Size-Constrained Region Merging (SCRM), a recently implemented software tool that provides the interpreter with an initial template of the to be mapped area that may reduce the manual digitization portion of the interpretation. In essence, SCRM transforms an ortho-rectified aerial or satellite image (single or multichannel) into a polygon vector layer that resembles the work of a human interpreter, whom with no a priori knowledge of the scene, was given the task of partitioning the image into a number of homogeneous polygons all exceeding a minimum size. We provide background information on SCRM foundations and workflow, and illustrate its application on three different types of satellite images. [Termes IGN] photo-interprétation assistée par ordinateurRésumé : (Auteur) The current study addresses the problem of the identification of each natural material present in each pixel of a hyperspectral image. Two end member extraction methods from hyperspectral imagery were studied: the N-FindR method and the independent component analysis (ICA). The N-FindR is an automatic technique that selects extreme points (end members) of an n-dimensional scatter plot. It assumes the existence of pure pixels in the distribution, which is infrequent in practice. ICA is a blind source separation technique studied in the signal processing community, which allows each spectrum of natural elements (end member spectra) to be extracted from the observation of some linear combinations of these. It considers a more realistic situation than N-FindR, assuming a spectra mixture for all the pixels. To increase the robustness of ICA, continuum-removed reflectance spectra were used and an iterative algorithm was introduced that takes into account a major part of the available information. The end member abundances were estimated by the fully constrained least squares spectral mixture analysis (FLCS). The end member identification and quantification were carried out on two surficial formations of a semi arid region located in the Rehoboth region, in Namibia, from hyperspectral Hyperion data. It appears that the two end member extraction methods have a similar potential. Whichever end member extraction method is used, the analysis of the rock abundance maps produces a lot of geological information: the distribution of natural elements is in line with the field observations and allows the description of the formation processes of surficial units. [Termes IGN] photo-interprétation assistée par ordinateurRésumé : (Auteur) An approach and strategy for automatic detection of buildings from aerial images using combined image analysis and interpretation techniques is described in this paper. It is undertaken in several steps. A dense DSM is obtained by stereo image matching and then the results of multi-band classification, the DSM, and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (ndvi) are used to reveal preliminary building interest areas. From these areas, a shape modeling algorithm has been used to precisely delineate their boundaries. The Dempster-Shafer data fusion technique is then applied to detect buildings from the combination of three data sources by a statistically-based classification. A number of test areas, which include buildings of different sizes, shape, and roof color have been investigated. The tests are encouraging and demonstrate that all processes in this system are important for effective building detection.
