[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The urban environment is characterized by an intense multifunctional use of available spaces, where the preservation of open green spaces is of special importance. For this purpose, areawide urban biotope mapping based on CIR aerial photographs has been carried out for the large cities in Germany during the last 10 years. Because of dynamic urban development and high mapping costs, the municipal authorities are interested in effective methods for mapping urban surface cover types, which can be used for evaluation of ecological conditions in urban structures and supporting updates of biotope maps. Against this background, airborne hyperspectral remote sensing data of the DAIS 7915 instrument have been analyzed for a test site in the city of Dresden (Germany) with regard to their potential for automated materialoriented identification of urban surface cover types. Previous investigations have shown that the high spectral and spatial variabilities of these data require the development of special methods, which are capable of dealing with the resulting mixedpixel problem in its specific characteristics in urban areas. Earlier, methodological developments led to an approach based on a combination of spectral classification and pixeloriented unmixing techniques to facilitate sensible endmember selection based on the reflective bands of the DAIS instrument. This approach is now extended by a shapebased classification technique including the thermal bands of the DAIS instrument to improve the detection of buildings during the process of identifying seedling pixels, which represent the starting points for linear spectral unmixing. This new approach increases the reliability of differentiation between buildings and open spaces, leading to more accurate results for the spatial distribution of surface cover types. Thus, the new approach significantly enhances the exploitation of the information potential of the hyperspectral DAIS 7915 data for an areawide identification of urban surface cover types. [Termes IGN] système expertRésumé : (Auteur) IKONOS 1 x 1 m panchromatic data fused with 4 X 4 m multispectral data were used for residential house detection in three 1 X 1 km study areas of Columbia, South Carolina. One study area contained houses built in the 1940s, another in the 1970s, and another in the 1990s. An expert system was developed to extract individual houses from the imagery. The system employed a data mining algorithm as the core of an automated knowledge acquisition module. Separate knowledge bases were generated for each study area using training samples and the data mining algorithm in two sequential stages. In the first stage, brightness values and NDVI yielded a knowledge base that was used to locate candidate house pixels. In the second stage, region metrics including size, shape, and a series of context variables were employed. Regions of asphalt roads mistakenly identified by the expert system as houses were removed using road buffers. Also, separate knowledge bases were generated both with and without the use of context variables. Each scenario was compared with a point map of photointerpreted (reference) houses. The photointerpreted database was verified against in situ housing counts. There was a strong increasing trend in both machine and photointerpreter accuracy as housing age decreased, with the highest accuracies (79 88%) in the 1990s study area. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Urban area building extraction is one of the most challenging problems in photogrammetry. Wellextracted buildings are needed for a variety of applications, such as cartography, building GIS databases for cities, and urban planning. This paper presents a new technique to extract 3D building wireframes using a robust multiimage linematching algorithm. Although one pair of images is adequate to find the 3D position of two visibly corresponding image, features, it is not sufficient to solve the general building extraction problem due to obscured parts in the building. Four images are used in this research to extract the building wireframes. First the images are segmented into regions. Regions are then classified into roof regions and nonroof regions based on their size, shape, and intensity values. The roof region boundary pixels are located and used to find the region perimeters. Region correspondence is solved in a pairwise mode over all images using the epipolar constraint, region size, region shape, and region intensity values. Image lines within the corresponding regions are matched over all images simultaneously by first creating a plane for each region line. Planes are then intersected simultaneously and geometric consistency is used to determine acceptance or rejection. Results with high overlap and sidelap aerial images are presented and evaluated. The results show the completeness and accuracy that this method can provide for extracting complex urban buildings. The average coordinate accuracy is about 08 m using 1:4000 scale aerial photographs scanned at 30 um Six buildings were examined; the line detection rate is 98%. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Although the GIS community has been quick to exploit the advantages of virtual reality (VR) for display and analysis of spatial data, VR does not appear to have been exploited widely for remote sensing data analysis. A case study of high resolution lidar data acquired over a deciduous forest near Morgantown, WV was used to investigate the potential and limitations of current VR software for remote sensing analysis. The functionality within a standard remote sensing software package was found to provide a good overview of interpolated, smoothed lidar data, but was less useful for gridded data that had not been interpolated. With gridded data, it was possible to drape orthophotographs or other images over the lidar data, providing a useful method for investigating relationships between lidar and other data. Alternatively, using a commercial VR package, it was possible to view the original lidar point data, and thus visualize the multiple returns from within the canopy of each tree. The point data were preferable for identification of surfaces within the data cloud, especially the ground surface. A detailed description of the most important considerations, leading to the development of the approach, is given: for the model of an individual tree, which is the base of the approach and for the strategy for low-level feature extraction and generation of hypotheses. In addition to that, the extraction of individual trees is discussed in relation to other topographic objects. The aim of this discussion is showing possibilities for the integration of the approach for trees into a system for automatic interpretation of remote sensing data. Here, extraction should be understood as the cognitive recognition of objects and their identification and reconstruction. The process of object extraction from images and/or surface models generally depends on an object model as well as a strategy for extraction of image features, their combination, and their relation to the model. A generic geometric model of a tree is used which basically consists of a function describing the tree top. Based on this model features are identified, which are used to recognise single trees from the image data. The basic idea for this strategy consists of two steps. At first, the often very complex fine structures are removed from the surface model by using various scale levels in linear scale space. As a result of scale-space transformation the tree top can be identified in the surface model based on the coarse structure. Here, the main problem is, that on the one hand the diameter of a single tree continuously varies in reality, but also strongly influences the choice of filter parameters. To overcome this difficulty, the image data was examined at different scale levels of linear scale-space. The extraction of the trees is performed using an algorithm: Firstly, segmentation of each scale-level with the watershed transformation is carried out. The resulting segments, which are potential candidates for tree tops, are evaluated with the help of fuzzy functions and based on the resulting membership values hypotheses are generated. The last step is the reconstruction of the crown's outline using a snake-algorithm. The procedure, developed for the extraction of trees from images and surface models in the context of this thesis, is applied in various small test areas. The positive as well as the negative results of these projects are presented, and the problems are discussed based on subsets of the test areas. An evaluation of the approach, and proposals for further development and research are given at the end of the thesis.
