[Termes IGN] SIG 3DRésumé : (Auteur) The development of a Geographic Information System (GIS) needs to import 3D solid elements created in three dimensions. The acquisition of these data is done, in most cases, by using a LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). Another possibility is the use of mobile mapping, integrated GNSS and inertial system (IMU). Subsequently, we conducted a thorough editing job. Certainly, if the scale of the project is larger, the amount of detail is greater and hence the cost and time of acquisition will be higher. Thus, the development of a GIS project for 3D applications, such as for the area of power distribution is still impractical for use in Brazil due to the high cost of 3D acquisition. Thus, to make the use of these tools in 3D GIS environment feasible an alternative methodology for cost reduction was developed. The alternative presented here was the use of an existing collection of photos, in this case refering to coverage on the scale 1:8000. Additionally, it used the 1: 2000 base map and a high resolution image from the QuickBird satellite (used as a backdrop and applied as texture in digital terrain model). On developing the project, we used the Opensource software, complete VTP (Virtual Terrain Project), including the libraries OGR, GDAL and vtdata vtlib compatible with MFC (Microsoft Foundation Class), GDI + (Graphics Device Interface Plus), and the database PostgreSQL (free database). 3D data modeling was done in order to reduce costs for an application to electricity distribution. Finally, we performed an analysis of the relative positional quality, and obtained satisfactory quantitative results, as presented in the text below. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (Auteur) Within the web a large number of routing applications exist. The majority of these applications are proprietary developments and do not provide the possibility to explore the background/source code and/or the specific algorithms. For most cases, an individual adaptation of these applications is not possible. Furthermore, the most of these applications are based on proprietary geodata. For the purpose of teaching and education – and also to be independent from external providers – a web based routing application based on OpenStreetMap data and Open Source software is of great advantage. This article describes how an individual routing in webmapping applications can be realized using OpenStreetMap data, the pgRouting library and the Open Source database management system PostgreSQL/PostGIS together with different scripting languages. [Termes IGN] QGISRésumé : (Auteur) University College London's Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (CEGE) offers a number of Masters programmes in topics related to Geomatics, including Surveying, Hydrographic Surveying, Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Science. Data management, and in particular the technology and applications of Spatial Databases, forms a key part of the curriculum on these courses. Interest in Spatial Databases is, however, more widespread – especially with the increasing understanding of the relevance of geospatial techniques to fields as diverse as anthropology and architecture. This article describes the development and evaluation of a self-paced hands-on course on Databases and Spatial Databases for CEGE students, presented to students to complement and enhance in-class teaching. The article focuses on both pedagogical elements of self-paced learning and the suitability of Free and Open Source Software and Open Data (PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Quantum GIS, Open Street Map) for the Spatial Databases curriculum. The resulting material was evaluated by a cohort of 25 students in 2010, and their feedback (very positive) and the overall results provide an interesting insight into suitable methods to employ when teaching technical subjects to a cohort having differing background skill levels.
