[Termes IGN] SIG 3DRésumé : (Auteur) 3-D analysis in GIS is still one of the most challenging topics for research. With the goal being to model possible movement within the built environment, this paper, therefore, proposes a new approach to handling connectivity relationships among 3-D objects in urban environments in order to implement spatial access analyses in 3-D Npace. To achieve this goal, this paper introduces a 3-D network data model called the geometric network model (GNM), which has been developed by transforming the combinatorial data model (CDM), representing a connectivity relationship among 3-D objects using a dual graph. For the transformation, this paper presents (1) an O(n2) algorithm for computing a straight medial axis transformation (MAT), (2) the processes for transforming phenomena from 3-D CDM to 3-D GNM, and (3) spatial access algorithms for the 3-D geometric network based upon the Dijkstra algorithm. Using the reconstructed geometric network generated from the transformations, spatial queries based upon the complex connectivity relationships between 3-D urban entities are implemented using Dijkstra algorithm. Finally, the paper presents the results of an experimental implementation of a 3-D network data model (GNM) using GIS data of an area in downtown Columbus, Ohio. [Termes IGN] SIG 3DRésumé : (Auteur) The quickly increasing number of spatio-temporal applications in fields like environmental monitoring, geology and mobile communication is a new challenge to the development of geodatabases. However, the query functionality of today's geo-information systems is still limited to the thematic attributes of spatial objects and to spatial 2D objects. This article reports on GeoToolKit, an object-oriented geo-database kernel system developed at Bonn University to support 3D/4D geological applications. GeoToolKit is not a GIS in a box package, but rather a library of C++ classes that allows the incorporation of spatiotemporal functionality within an application. Being a component toolkit, it encourages the development and deployment of re-usable and open software. The history, concepts and implementation of GeoToolKit are discussed in detail. Performance tests underline the practicability of the concepts. Extensions to and experiences with GeoToolKit applications like GeoStore, GeoWeb and WellStore are presented. Finally, we give an outlook on our future research introducing GeoToolKit as a 3D/4D database component within a network of distributed and mobile geo-information services. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Developing a three-dimensional (3D) data model for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is an essential and complex issue. 3D modelling in GIS is becoming ever more important for the development of cyber cities and digital earth, which have recently become feasible. A competent 3D model forms an efficient foundation for 3D visualization, query and spatial analysis. As a development of the existing 3D models, this study proposes particular improvements in handling complex 3D objects. We present an object-oriented data model for handling complex 3D objects in GIS. First, the conceptual data model is developed based on the principle of object-oriented (00) data modelling. This model is designed based on the following three basic geometric elements: node, segment and triangle. Accordingly, the abstract geometric objects are defined: including points, lines, surfaces and volumes. Second, the corresponding 3D logical model is designed based on the defined abstract objects and the relationships between them. Third, a formal representation of the 3D spatial objects is described in detail. Fourth, a prototype 3D GIS is developed based on the proposed 3D data model. Finally, we describe the results of an experimental study to reconstruct 3D objects using this 3D GIS and a comparison with the performance of other 3D data models. The proposed model is able to handle complex objects, such as complex buildings and TV towers, which is an essential functionality for building large-scale cyber cities, such as for Hong Kong. The proposed data model proves to be very efficient, particularly in visualization and rendering. The experimental results show which the data volume of the proposed model is compacted and the visualization speed for 3D objects is improved, compared with the existing models. Recent progress in 3D data capturing and web-based visualisation technologies are opening up new possibilities for a wide-spread use of 3D landscape models as a basis for new and exciting information and entertainment services. However, with the rapidly increasing size and complexity of the 3D models being acquired, a pressing need for suitable data management solutions has become apparent. This paper outlines why 3D GIS technologies are a key factor in establishing and maintaining large-scale, reality-based 3D geoinformation services. It also discusses specific features which should be provided by such 3D GIS in order to support the efficient visualisation and animation of reality-based landscape and city models. The aspects of managing reality-based 3D models within a 3D GIS environment are being investigated as part of the DILAS (Digital Landscape Server) project. DILAS is a fully DBMS supported framework and now a commercial product line - combining object-relational and XML technologies for the integrated management of very large 3D landscape and city models. The system provides a comprehensive support for colour, transparency, textures as well as animations and view control. This support for reality-based 3D models within a 3D GIS environment enables the automated generation of web-based 3D scenes with user-defined contents and appearance. The paper concludes with the presentation of pilot projects from application areas which will largely benefit from the functionality presented above.
