[Termes IGN] pixelRésumé : (Auteur) In the remote sensing literature, a number of indices have been proposed for quantifying the uncertainty in categorical labelling of fuzzy thematic map locations. Most of these measures derive their conceptual basis from Shannon's entropy. Nonetheless, the Shannon entropy implies a probabilistic interpretation of class membership values, such that their application is appropriate only for fuzzy thematic maps obtained by softening the output of a maximum likelihood classification. There is therefore a need to derive measures of classification uncertainty for raster thematic maps obtained from nonprobabilistic soft classifiers. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a family of measures that are based on the notion of nonspecificity for quantifying the pixellevel categorical uncertainty associated to nonprobabilistic fuzzy classifications of remotely sensed images. [Termes IGN] service fondé sur la positionRésumé : (Editeur) Installed GPS navigation systems are becoming popular options for new car buyers. And many aftermarket, portable, and PDA- or cell phone-based systems are available in the marketplace. A basic GPS navigation system can provide continuous, accurate navigation, except when the GPS signals are blocked by buildings, tunnels, or other obstructions or when multipath or interference reduces position accuracy. A factory-installed system might include additional sensors such as an odometer or gyroscope to provide dead-reckoning navigation when GPS signals are lacking. Another aid to accurate navigation is map-matching in which the computed position fix is snapped onto the nearest road. However, depending on the fix error and the density of the road network, the system may or may not snap the fix onto the correct road. In this month's column, guest authors Syed and Cannon examine a novel technique that tightly integrates information from accurate maps with raw GPS and gyro data to determine a vehicle's position. Using classic statistical theory and fuzzy logic algorithms, the technique improved vehicle navigation accuracy in an urban canyon setting by more than 30 percent. [Termes IGN] objet mobileRésumé : (Auteur) For some spatiotemporal applications, it can be assumed that the modeled world is precise and bounded, and that also our record of it is precise. While these simplifying assumptions are sufficient in applications like a land information system, they are unnecessarily crude for many other applications that manage data with spatial and/or temporal extents, such as navigational applications. This work explores fuzziness and uncertainty, subsumed under the term indeterminacy, in the spatiotemporal context. To better illustrate the basic spatiotemporal concepts of change or evolution, it is shown how the fundamental modeling concepts of spatial objects, attributes, and relationships and time points and periods are influenced by indeterminacy and how they can be combined. In particular, the focus is on the change of spatial objects and their geometries across time. Four change scenarios are outlined, which concern discrete versus continuous change and asynchronous versus synchronous measurement, and it is shown how to model indeterminacy for each. A case study illustrates the applicability of the paper's general proposal by describing the uncertainty related to the management of the movements of point objects, such as the management of vehicle positions in a fleet management system. [Termes IGN] système expertRésumé : (Auteur) A generic problem associated with different land cover maps that cover the same geographical area is the use of different legend categories. There may be disagreement in many areas when comparing different land cover products even though the legend shows the same or very similar land cover class. To capture the uncertainty associated with both differences in the legend and the difficulty in classification when comparing two land cover maps, expert knowledge and a fuzzy logic framework are used to map the fuzzy agreement. The methodology is illustrated by comparing the Global Land Cover 2000 data set and the MODIS global land cover product. Overall accuracy measures are calculated, and the spatial fuzzy agreement between the two land cover products is provided. This approach can be used to improved the overall confidence in a land cover product, since areas of severe disagreement can be highlighted, and areas can be identified that require further attention and possible re-mapping.
