[Termes IGN] résonanceRésumé : (Auteur) Following an earlier recognition of degraded monthly geopotential recovery from GRACE (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment) due to prolonged passage through a short repeat (low order resonant) orbit, we extend these insights also to CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload) and GOCE (Gravity field and steady state Ocean Circulation Explorer). We show wide track-density variations over time for these orbits in both latitude and longitude, and estimate that geopotential recovery will be as widely affected as well within all these regimes, with lesser track density leading to poorer recoveries. We then use recent models of atmospheric density to estimate the future orbit of GRACE and warn of degraded performance as other low order resonances are encountered in GRACE’s free fall. Finally implications for the GOCE orbit are discussed. [Termes IGN] précision des mesuresRésumé : (Auteur) Despite the relatively high cost of airborne lidar-derived digital elevation models (DEMs), such products are usually presented without a satisfactory associated estimate of accuracy. For the most part, DEM accuracy estimates are typically provided by comparing lidar heights against a finite sample of check point coordinates from an independent source of higher accuracy, supposing a normal distribution of the derived height differences or errors. This paper proposes a new methodology to assess the vertical accuracy of lidar DEMs using confidence intervals constructed from a finite sample of errors computed at check points. A non-parametric approach has been tested where no particular error distribution is assumed, making the proposed methodology especially applicable to non-normal error distributions of the type usually found in DEMs derived from lidar. The performance of the proposed model was experimentally validated using Monte Carlo simulation on 18 vertical error data-sets. Fifteen of these data-sets were computed from original lidar data provided by the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Working Group III/3, using their respective filtered reference data as ground truth. The three remaining data-sets were provided by the Natural Environment Research Council's Airborne Research and Survey Facility lidar system, together with check points acquired using high precision kinematic GPS. The results proved promising, the proposed models reproducing the statistical behaviour of vertical errors of lidar using a favourable number of check points, even in the cases of data-sets with non-normally distributed residuals. This research can therefore be considered as a potentially important step towards improving the quality control of lidar-derived DEMs. Copyright RS&PS + Blackwell Publishing Numéro de notice : A2008-295 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article DOI : 10.1111/j.1477-9730.2008.00476.x En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1477-9730.2008.00476.x Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=29288

[Termes IGN] précision des mesuresRésumé : (Editeur) [...] The odometer was likely first invented by Archimides during the First Punic War when Syracuse got in the way of Rome during its battle with Carthage. A Greek origin is fitting as the word odometer derives from the Greek words hodos, meaning "path" or "way" and matron, meaning "measure," The device was reinvented many times over the years but its use was not widespread until the development of the automobile, and now virtually every vehicle sports one. Mechanical odometers gave way to electronic ones but the distance travelled was and is still determined by counting wheel revolutions. But just how accurate are the odometers in our modern vehicles? Not very, it seems. The odometer reading is affected by tire pressure, tire slip, and incorrect calibration. And while in many countries there is no regulation covering odometer accuracy, the Society of Automotive Engineers' voluntary standard and that of the European Commission is only plus or minus 4 percent, or as much as a 4-kilometer error in every 100 km. Does this matter? Well, in effort to reduce the cost to the general tax payer of maintaining roads or reducing congestion, many administrations have implemented "road pricing," where a flat charge is levied for using a particular stretch of road or for entering a city center. But some administrations are charging per kilometer of travel with data coming from an odometer recording. Automobile insurance companies have also implemented plans where the premium is based on the distance travelled by the vehicle ("pay as you drive"). To fairly implement such schemes, governments should require more accurate odometers in vehicles. Could an odometer based on GNSS be a solution? In this month's column, we take a look at how distance travelled can be computed from GNSS observations and just how accurate those computations are. Cette année, le thème retenu pour les interventions tournait autour de la "modélisation d'environnements urbains à partir de systèmes mobiles d'acquisition de données". Un choix qui faisait la part belle aux véhicules et aux robots. [Termes IGN] visualisation simultanéeRésumé : (Auteur) This paper discusses the evaluation of a video stereo-image capture tool for photogrammetric applications. The ‘‘NuView Adapter’’, a commonly available video-image splitting device, and a digital video camera (DV) could be used to capture stereoscopic video footage for many photogrammetric applications in which low-cost near-simultaneous stereo-images are required for 3D viewing or for 3D spatial data capture. Relevant photogrammetric applications might include: aerial surveillance, human/animal motion study (tracking), bank/security surveillance and precise 3D animation. The device permits two distinct views (left and right perspective views) to enter a single lens DV. A single convergence control in the device allows the user to obtain a stereo view of near and far objects. The system is easy to operate and the stereo-images give a good visual 3D effect. Research was carried out to determine the quality of the stereo-image for 3D measurement. The investigation involved: (1) the calibration of a customised system for optimum close range photogrammetric application; and (2) a case study involving motion tracking. A semi-automated monodigitising photogrammetric technique was used to determine the accuracy of the system. The results show that this system could achieve a spatial data accuracy of better than 13 mm at an object distance of 9 m. The horizontal and vertical accuracies are similar to those obtained by the conventional stereoscopic camera technique using a ‘‘normal case’’ configuration with 86% overlap.
