[Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, the efficiency of an integrated operational system, based on three satellite infrared techniques, to support nowcasting and very short range forecasting of high precipitation rates provided by a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model is examined. Three algorithms, one for the detection and tracking of convective cloud cells and another two for rainfall estimation, are applied on satellite sensor data in order to qualitatively and quantitatively verify the precipitation forecasts provided by a NWP model. The application of the detection and tracking algorithm aims at verifying qualitatively, in real time, the precipitation forecasts by monitoring the detected convective cloud cells, at the same time intervals that the model forecasts are given. The application of the rainfall estimation techniques on satellite sensor data is needed for both quantitative and qualitative crosscomparisons with the model outputs. The developed tool is applied in a case of intense precipitation over Greece. The results of the application are promising and show the potential for the implementation of the integrated system as a support tool for nowcasting and very short range forecasting by performing realtime validation of NWP precipitation forecasts. [Termes IGN] surveillance météorologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The ENVISAT mission with a suite of high performance sensors offers some opportunities for mapping snow cover at regional and catchment scales. The spatial resolution of the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer Instrument (MERIS) data and the spectral characteristics of the Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) data are suitable for these purposes. A new approach has been developed for the generation of snow cover products in Alpine regions, based on the combined use of ENVISAT optical data and topographic information. The Alpine region is selected as a test area to demonstrate the potential and the limitations of the novel approach. In particular, attention is focused on three regions of northern Italy (Valle d'Aosta, Piemonte, Lombardia). The first results obtained by the application of this new method to Earth Observation data will be presented and analysed. [Termes IGN] régressionRésumé : (Auteur) Cloud-free optical satellite imagery simplifies remote sensing, but land-cover phenology limits existing solutions to persistent cloudiness to compositing temporally resolute, spatially coarser imagery. Here, a new strategy for developing cloud-free imagery at finer resolution permits simple automatic change detection. The strategy uses regression trees to predict pixel values underneath clouds and cloud shadows in reference scenes from other scene dates. It then applies improved histogram matching to adjacent scenes. In the study area, the islands of Puerto Rico, Vieques, and Culebra, Landsat image mosaics resulting from this strategy permit accurate detection of land development with only spectral data and maximum likelihood classification. Between about 1991 and 2000, urban/built-up lands increased by 7.2 percent in Puerto Rico and 49 percent in Vieques and Culebra. The regression tree modeling and histogram matching require no manual interpretation. Consequently, they can support large volume processing to distribute cloud-free imagery for simple change detections with common classifiers. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, an automatic algorithm for tracking convective cloud cells, on the basis of infrared and water vapour Meteosat images, is applied in the case of intense precipitation events of 26b and 27 january 1996 in Greece, and a the results are presented. The case presented in this study has the particularity of consisting of several localized maximum precipitation events that resulted from small mesoscale convective systems. The ability of the algorithm to detect and track in Meteosat images, in real mode, propagating cloud systems of this size, through the monitoring of several cloud parameters that express cloud development and movement, is examined. It was found that the algorithm was capable of identifying small mesoscale cloud cells and tracking them consistently to the point of dissipation. Moreover, the introduction in the algorithm of new cloud parameters, which are directly related to the cloud-top structure, has proved very valuable in providing additional information on the convective potential of the detected cloud cells. Finally, an empirical nowcasting of convective cloud movement and evolution could be carried out in many cases to support the forecaster's decisions by using information on cloud speed, direction and development in conjunction with synoptic analysis.
