[Termes IGN] précipitationRésumé : (Auteur) The regression analyses undertaken commonly in remote sensing are aspatial, ignoring the locational information associated with each sample site at which the variables under study were measured. Typically, basic ordinary least squares regression analysis is used to derive a relationship that is believed to be uniformly applicable across the study area. Although such global analyses may appear satisfactory, often with large coefficients of determination derived, they may provide an inappropriate description of the relationship between the variables under study. In particular, a global regression analysis may miss local detail that can be significant if the relationship is spatially nonstationary. Local statistical approaches, such as geographically weighted regression, include the spatial coordinates of the sample sites in the analysis and may provide a more appropriate basis for the investigation of the relationship between variables. The potential value of geographically weighted regression to the remote sensing community is illustrated with reference to the relationship between the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) and rainfall over north Africa and the Middle East over an 8-year period. For each year, spatial non-stationarity was evident, particularly with regard to the slope parameter of the regression model. Moreover, the conventional ordinary least squares regression models, while superficially strong (minimum R2 == 0.67), were relatively poor local descriptors of the relationship. Relative to this, the geographically weighted approach to regression provided considerably stronger relationships from the same data sets (minimum R2 = 0.96) as well as highlighting areas of local variation. The implications of the difference in the outputs from the two types of regression analysis are illustrated with reference to the use of the derived NDVI-rainfall relationships in mapping desert extent. For example, with the data relating to 1987 the southern limit of the Sahara was generally estimated to lie at a more southerly position when the relationship derived from OLS rather than geographically weighted regression was used. [Termes IGN] valeur efficaceRésumé : (Auteur) Differential GPS is able to provide cm-level positoning accuracies, as long as the carrier phase ambiguities are resolved to integer values. Classical methods are based on the use of a single reference station located in the vicinity of the rover. Due to the spatial decorrelation of the errors, the distance between the reference station and the user is generally limited to within 20-30 km or even less, mainly due to the ionosphere. The MultiRef method, developed at the University of Calgary, uses a network of reference stations to generate regional code and carrier phase corrections, which can be transmitted to users in order to increase the distance over which integer ambiguity resolution is possible. In the original method, the correlated errors, due to the satellite orbits, troposphere, and ionosphere are modeled together using the L1 and wide-lane observables. In this paper extensive efforts were carried out towards as optimizing the MultiRef method with the objective of maximizing its performance. Data collected in southeastern Brazil was used in this research. At first, the impact of using covariance function calculated with different data sets was assessed, showing improvement variations of up to 14% in the observation domain compared to using no network corrections, with the exact improvement depending on the data set used in the computation. A new approach, also using least-squares prediction (collation), was proposed to separately model the correlated errors. An additional effort was carried out in the terms of modeling the ionosphere into directional components. Results of the enhanced method showed the same level of improvement as those obtained using the original covariance functions. However, this new approach has advantages with respect to the transmission of the corrections. Finally, an additional step was taken in terms of applying a Kalman filter to the corrections in order to improve their quality. For cases when the corresponding satellite was setting at low elevations, the filter approach improved results up to 44%. A study on the impact of the various covariance functions on the estimated accuracy of the corrections is also included. [Termes IGN] restitutionRésumé : (Auteur) Digital elevation models (DEMs) produced from photogrammetric data sources have long relied on the use of ground control points to give them scale and orientation. However, in areas such as coastlines, landslides, or glaciers, where identification of suitable natural features and premarking is difficult, the use of conventional ground control may be unfeasible. This paper reports on research that uses independently collected DEMs derived from kinematic GPS to orient surfaces produced by aerial photogrammetric methods, using a leastsquares surface matching algorithm. During algorithm development, three stages of testing were carried out, Using increasingly more complex datasets. Initially, simulated surfaces were used to validate the matching theory and program. Then, a DEM derived from conventional aerial photography was matched with a GPS model, highlighting the effectiveness of surface matching to recover systematic errors in datosets. Finally, surfaces derived from small format digital imagery were successfully fused with wireframe GPS surfaces, the high redundancy and automation potential creating an elegant and cheaper alternative to photocontrol.
