[Termes IGN] transformation de coordonnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The multivariate total least-squares (MTLS) approach aims at estimating a matrix of parameters, ?, from a linear model (Y-E Y = (X-E X ) · ?) that includes an observation matrix, Y, another observation matrix, X, and matrices of randomly distributed errors, E Y and E X . Two special cases of the MTLS approach include the standard multivariate least-squares approach where only the observation matrix, Y, is perturbed by random errors and, on the other hand, the data least-squares approach where only the coefficient matrix X is affected by random errors. In a previous contribution, the authors derived an iterative algorithm to solve the MTLS problem by using the nonlinear Euler–Lagrange conditions. In this contribution, new lemmas are developed to analyze the iterative algorithm, modify it, and compare it with a new ‘closed form’ solution that is based on the singular-value decomposition. For an application, the total least-squares approach is used to estimate the affine transformation parameters that convert cadastral data from the old to the new Israeli datum. Technical aspects of this approach, such as scaling the data and fixing the columns in the coefficient matrix are investigated. This case study illuminates the issue of “symmetry” in the treatment of two sets of coordinates for identical point fields, a topic that had already been emphasized by Teunissen (1989, Festschrift to Torben Krarup, Geodetic Institute Bull no. 58, Copenhagen, Denmark, pp 335–342). The differences between the standard least-squares and the TLS approach are analyzed in terms of the estimated variance component and a first-order approximation of the dispersion matrix of the estimated parameters. [Termes IGN] reconstruction 3DRésumé : (Auteur) The sub-pixel location of interest points is one of the most important tasks in refined image-based 3D reconstruction in digital photogrammetry. The interest point detectors based on the Harris principles are generally used for stereoscopic image matching and subsequent 3D reconstruction. However, the locations of the interest points detected in this way can only be obtained to 1 pixel accuracy. The Harris detector has the following characteristics: (1) the Harris interest strength, which denotes the distinctiveness of an interest point, is a grey scale descriptor which computes the gradient at each sample point in a region around the point, and (2) the Harris interest strengths of the pixels in a template window centred on the interest point exhibit an approximately paraboloid distribution. This paper proposes a precise location method to improve the precision of the interest points on the basis of these characteristics of the Harris interest strength. Firstly, a least squares fit of a paraboloid function to the image grey scale surface using the Harris interest strength is designed in a template window and a Gaussian-distance algorithm is employed to determine the weight. Then, the precise coordinates of this interest point are obtained by calculating the extremities of the fitting surface. The location accuracy of this method is studied both from the theoretical and the practical point of view. Experimental analysis is illustrated with synthetic images as well as actual images, which yielded a location accuracy of 0·15 pixels. Furthermore, experimental results also indicate that this method has the desired anti-image-noise and efficiency characteristics. [Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) 3D surface matching would be an ill conditioned problem when the curvature of the object surface is either homogenous or isotropic, e.g. for plane or spherical types of objects. A reliable solution can only be achieved if supplementary information or functional constraints are introduced. In a previous paper, an algorithm for the least squares matching of overlapping 3D surfaces, which were digitized/sampled point by point using a laser scanner device, by the photogrammetric method or other techniques, was proposed [Gruen, A., and Akca, D., 2005. Least squares 3D surface and curve matching. ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing 59 (3), 151–174.]. That method estimates the transformation parameters between two or more fully 3D surfaces, minimizing the Euclidean distances instead of z-differences between the surfaces by least squares. In this paper, an extension to the basic algorithm is given, which can simultaneously match surface geometry and its attribute information, e.g. intensity, colour, temperature, etc. under a combined estimation model. Three experimental results based on terrestrial laser scanner point clouds are presented. The experiments show that the basic algorithm can solve the surface matching problem provided that the object surface has at least the minimal information. If not, the laser scanner derived intensities are used as supplementary information to find a reliable solution. The method derives its mathematical strength from the least squares image matching concept and offers a high level of flexibility for many kinds of 3D surface correspondence problem.
