[Termes IGN] signal laserRésumé : (Auteur) Automatic ground filtering for Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) data is a critical process for Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and three-dimensional urban model generation. Although researchers have developed many methods to separate bare ground from other urban features, the problem has not been fully solved due to the similar characteristics possessed by ground and non-ground objects, especially on abrupt surfaces. Current methods can be grouped into two major categories: neighborhood-based approaches and directional filtering. In this study, following the direction of the second branch, we propose a new Multi-directional Ground Filtering (MGF) algorithm to incorporate a two-dimensional neighborhood in the directional scanning so as to prevent the errors introduced by the sensitivity to directions. Besides this, the MGF algorithm explores the utility of identifying pattern varieties in different directions across an image. The authors conducted a comprehensive test of the performance on fifteen study sites and compared our results to eight other publicized methods based on the Kappa coefficients calculated from the error matrices reported by ISPRS. Overall, the MGF filter produces a promising performance in both urban and forest areas. The size and shape of non-ground objects do not pose significant influence on the performance of the MGF algorithm. The fact that MGF algorithm is robust to two commonly required parameters, slope and elevation difference thresholds, has added practical merits to be adopted in different landscapes. An advanced discussion, this text fills the void. Professionals in fields ranging from geology, geography and geoinformatics to physics, transportation, and law enforcement will benefit from this comprehensive discussion of topographic LiDAR principles, systems, data acquisition, and data processing techniques. The book covers ranging and scanning fundamentals, and broad, contemporary analysis of airborne LiDAR systems, as well as those situated on land and in space. The authors present data collection at the signal level in terms of waveforms and their properties; at the system level with regard to calibration and georeferencing; and at the data level to discuss error budget, quality control, and data organization. They devote the bulk of the book to LiDAR data processing and information extraction and elaborate on recent developments in building extraction and reconstruction, highlighting quality and performance evaluations. There is also extensive discussion of the state-of-the-art technological developments used in: filtering algorithms for digital terrain model generation; strip adjustment of data for registration; co-registration of LiDAR data with imagery; forestry inventory; and surveying. Readers get insight into why LiDAR is the effective tool of choice to collect massive volumes of explicit 3-D data with unprecedented accuracy and simplicity. Compiled by leading experts talking about much of their own pioneering work, this book will give researchers, professionals, and senior students novel ideas to supplement their own experience and practices. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Research in the area of 3D city modelling from remote sensed data greatly developed in recent years with an emphasis on systems dealing with the detection and representation of man-made objects, such as buildings and streets. While these systems produce accurate representations of urban environments, they ignore information about the vegetation component of a city. This paper presents a complete image analysis system which, from high-resolution color infrared (CIR) digital images, and a Digital Surface Model (DSM), extracts, segments and classifies vegetation in high density urban areas, with very high reliability. The process starts with the extraction of all vegetation areas using a supervised classification system based on a Support Vector Machines (SVM) classifier. The result of this first step is further on used to separate trees from lawns using texture criteria computed on the DSM. Tree crown borders are identified through a robust region growing algorithm based on tree-shape criteria. A SVM classifier gives the species class for each tree region previously identified. This classification is used to enhance the appearance of 3D city models by a realistic representation of vegetation according to the vegetation land use, shape and tree species.
