[Termes IGN] modèle 3D de l'espace urbainRésumé : (Auteur) The paper focuses mainly on extraction of important topographic objects, like buildings and roads, that have received much attention the last decade. As main input data, aerial imagery is considered, although other data, like from laser scanner, SAR and high-resolution satellite imagery, can be also used. After a short review of recent image analysis trends, and strategy and overall system aspects of knowledge-based image analysis, the paper focuses on aspects of knowledge that can be used for object extraction: types of knowledge, problems in using existing knowledge, knowledge representation and management, current and possible use of knowledge, upgrading and augmenting of knowledge. Finally, an overview on commercial systems regarding automated object extraction and use of a priori knowledge is given. In spite of many remaining unsolved problems and need for further research and development, use of knowledge and semi-automation are the only viable alternatives towards development of useful object extraction systems, as some commercial systems on building extraction and 3D city modelling as well as advanced, practically oriented research have shown. [Termes IGN] reconstruction 3D du bâtiRésumé : (Auteur) Automatic 3D building reconstruction has becoming increasingly important for a number of applications. The reconstruction of buildings using only aerial images as data source has been proven to be a very difficult problem. The complexity of the reconstruction can be greatly reduced by combining the aerial images with other data sources. In this paper, we describe a 3D building reconstruction method that integrates the aerial image analysis with information from large-scale 2D Geographic Information System (GIS) databases and domain knowledge. By combining the images with GIS data, the specific strengths of both the images (high resolution, accuracy, and large-information content) and the GIS data (relatively simple interpretation) are exploited. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Developing a three-dimensional (3D) data model for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is an essential and complex issue. 3D modelling in GIS is becoming ever more important for the development of cyber cities and digital earth, which have recently become feasible. A competent 3D model forms an efficient foundation for 3D visualization, query and spatial analysis. As a development of the existing 3D models, this study proposes particular improvements in handling complex 3D objects. We present an object-oriented data model for handling complex 3D objects in GIS. First, the conceptual data model is developed based on the principle of object-oriented (00) data modelling. This model is designed based on the following three basic geometric elements: node, segment and triangle. Accordingly, the abstract geometric objects are defined: including points, lines, surfaces and volumes. Second, the corresponding 3D logical model is designed based on the defined abstract objects and the relationships between them. Third, a formal representation of the 3D spatial objects is described in detail. Fourth, a prototype 3D GIS is developed based on the proposed 3D data model. Finally, we describe the results of an experimental study to reconstruct 3D objects using this 3D GIS and a comparison with the performance of other 3D data models. The proposed model is able to handle complex objects, such as complex buildings and TV towers, which is an essential functionality for building large-scale cyber cities, such as for Hong Kong. The proposed data model proves to be very efficient, particularly in visualization and rendering. The experimental results show which the data volume of the proposed model is compacted and the visualization speed for 3D objects is improved, compared with the existing models. [Termes IGN] système d'information urbainRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents how ultra high resolution remote sensing data can be used within a GIS environment for 3D city modelling and the development of urban information systems. The paper concentrates on techniques to use digital surface models (DSM's) from remotely sensed data for the creation of highly accurate digital terrain models (DTM's). DSM's can be obtained from digital stereo scanner data or from laserscanning. It can be demonstrated that DSM's from laserscanning are better suited for 3D city analysis. Using GIS techniques, however, also DSM's from stereo matching can be improved to produce highly accurate DTM's. Together with image and GIS (e.g. digital cadastral) data, these DTM's form a 3D urban information system which can be used for example for the generation of 3D simulation models that are heavily inquired for the derivation of propagation patterns (e.g., pollution, noise, radio waves).
