[Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) The news that the Microsoft Corporation is in the process of trying to acquire the Vexcel Corporation was first reported on 15th march 2006 by Daily Camera, a local newsparer published in Vexcel's home town of Boulder, Colorado. Somewhat belatedly, this leaked news was confirmed by spokesmen for Microsoft and Vexcel a day or two later. All of which triggered an outpouring of comment on numerous Web sites from Microsoft "watchers" and "bloggers". It was only too apparent from the published comments that many of these "bloggers" simply have little or no idea as to what Vexcel does and why it should be attractive to Microsoft. So the publisher invited me to supply my own thoughts opinions on the matter of this projected take-over of Vexcel. It is very much a personal viewpoint ! Copyright Geoinformatics. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) The ever-increasing number of spatial data sets accessible through spatial data clearinghouses continues to make geographic information retrieval and spatial data discovery major challenges. Such challenges have been addressed in the discipline of Information Retrieval through ranking of data according to inferred degrees of relevance. Spatial data, however, present an additional challenge as they are characteristically made up of geometry, attribute and, optionally, temporal components. As these components are mutually independent of one another, this paper suggests that they be ranked independently of one another. The representation of the results of the independent ranking of these three components of spatial data suggests that representation of the results of the ranking process requires an alternative approach to currently used textual ranked lists: visualisation of relevance in a three-dimensional visualisation environment. To illustrate the possible application of such an approach, a prototype browser is presented. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Mapping of the Earth's surface from satellite images is a continuing application in remote sensing, which has been distinctly pushed with the increasing availability of very high-resolution image data. In most of the missions, stereo images can be acquired making 3D mapping from space very attractive, as high accuracy and level of detail become feasible from such data. In this paper, several case studies are presented, which have been applied to stereo pairs acquired by the SPOT sensors as well as the very high-resolution Ikonos sensor. As an extension to standard stereo mapping, a 3D mapping approach which makes use of multiple image coverage is presented. For this work, image triplets including multi-sensor data sets have been used to extract 3D topography information and to generate digital surface models. The benefit of this extended approach is comparatively assessed with respect to results achieved from standard stereo mapping.
