[Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (auteur) We propose a new method for the reconstruction of simplicial complexes (combining points, edges and triangles) from 3D point clouds from Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS). Our method uses the inherent topology of the MLS sensor to define a spatial adjacency relationship between points. We then investigate each possible connexion between adjacent points, weighted according to its distance to the sensor, and filter them by searching collinear structures in the scene, or structures perpendicular to the laser beams. Next, we create and filter triangles for each triplet of self-connected edges and according to their local planarity. We compare our results to an unweighted simplicial complex reconstruction. [Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (auteur) Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) is often used to monitor landslides and other gravitational mass movements with high levels of geometric detail and accuracy. However, unstructured TLS point clouds lack semantic information, which is required to geomorphologically interpret the measured changes. Extracting meaningful objects in a complex and dynamic environment is challenging due to the objects' fuzziness in reality, as well as the variability and ambiguity of their patterns in a morphometric feature space. This work presents a point‐cloud‐based approach for classifying multitemporal scenes of a hillslope affected by shallow landslides. The 3D point clouds are segmented into morphologically homogeneous and spatially connected parts. These segments are classified into seven target classes (scarp, eroded area, deposit, rock outcrop and different classes of vegetation) in a two‐step procedure: a supervised classification step with a machine‐learning classifier using morphometric features, followed by a correction step based on topological rules. This improves the final object extraction considerably. [Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (Auteur) Choice of a distance metric is a key for the success in many machine learning and data processing tasks. The distance between two data samples traditionally depends on the values of their attributes (coordinates) in a data space. Some metrics also take into account the distribution of samples within the space (e.g. local densities) aiming to improve potential classification or clustering performance. In this paper, we suggest the Social Distance metric that can be used on top of any traditional metric. For a pair of samples x and y, it averages the two numbers: the place (rank), which sample y holds in the list of ordered nearest neighbors of x; and vice versa, the rank of x in the list of the nearest neighbors of y. Average is a contraharmonic Lehmer mean, which penalizes the difference between the numbers by giving values greater than the Arithmetic mean for the unequal arguments. We consider normalized average as a distance function and we prove it to be a metric. We present several modifications of such metric and show that their properties are useful for a variety of classification and clustering tasks in data spaces or graphs in a Geographic Information Systems context and beyond. [Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (auteur) In this paper, we focus on the automatic interpretation of 3D point cloud data in terms of associating a class label to each 3D point. While much effort has recently been spent on this research topic, little attention has been paid to the influencing factors that affect the quality of the derived classification results. For this reason, we investigate fundamental influencing factors making geometric features more or less relevant with respect to the classification task. We present a framework which consists of five components addressing point sampling, neighborhood recovery, feature extraction, classification and feature relevance assessment. To analyze the impact of the main influencing factors which are represented by the given point sampling and the selected neighborhood type, we present the results derived with different configurations of our framework for a commonly used benchmark dataset for which a reference labeling with respect to three structural classes (linear structures, planar structures and volumetric structures) as well as a reference labeling with respect to five semantic classes (Wire, Pole/Trunk, Façade, Ground and Vegetation) is available.
