[Termes IGN] traitement géométrique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) In order to be able to draw inferences about real world phenomena from a representation expressed in a digital computer, it is essential that the representation should have a rigorously correct algebraic structure. It is also desirable that the underlying algebra be familiar, and provide a close modelling of those phenomena. The fundamental problem addressed in this paper is that, since computers do not support real-number arithmetic, the algebraic behaviour of the representation may not be correct, and cannot directly model a mathematical abstraction of space based on real numbers. This paper describes a basis for the robust geometrical construction of spatial objects in computer applications using a complex called the “Regular Polytope”. In contrast to most other spatial data types, this definition supports a rigorous logic within a finite digital arithmetic. The definition of connectivity proves to be non-trivial, and alternatives are investigated. It is shown that these alternatives satisfy the relations of a region connection calculus (RCC) as used for qualitative spatial reasoning, and thus introduce the rigor of that reasoning to geographical information systems. They also form what can reasonably be termed a “Finite Boolean Connection Algebra”. The rigorous and closed nature of the algebra ensures that these primitive functions and predicates can be combined to any desired level of complexity, and thus provide a useful toolkit for data retrieval and analysis. The paper argues for a model with two and three-dimensional objects that have been coded in Java and which implement a full set of topological and connectivity functions which is shown to be complete and rigorous. [Termes IGN] solideRésumé : (Auteur) The goal of this research is to develop a 3D topological structure to represent a 3D space partition with validation functionality and support for conversions from topological to geometrical primitives. Several 3D topological structures have been presented in the past, mainly by researchers. The technical (implementation) model developed in this paper is based on the conceptual model of the ISO 19107 spatial schema' standard and consists of four topological primitives: node, edge, face, and volume, which are related to each other via their (co)boundary relationships. In our setting, only linear primitives (no curves) are supported and no isolated and dangling primitives are allowed. In our model, the rings, the shells, and the orientation play key roles within the topological structure and the functions that implement the geometrical realization. There was no formal definition of a valid 3D topological structure available and this paper presents such a definition, which is the main novel contribution. This definition is presented in three levels, where at every next level the definition is further refined such that finally a set of rules is proposed, which can be implemented unambiguously. In order to validate a 3D topological structure, the involved volumes must be valid as well as the whole structure, which means the relationships between the volumes. The rules for a valid structure have been implemented on top of Oracle Spatial and tested with artificial and real-world test data. [Termes IGN] structure de données localiséesRésumé : (Auteur) While CityGML permits us to represent 3D city models, its use for applications where spatial analysis and/or real-time modifications are required is limited since at this moment the possibility to store topological relationships between the elements is rather limited and often not exploited. We present in this paper a new topological data structure, the dual half-edge (DHE), which permits us to represent the topology of 3D buildings (including their interiors) and of the surrounding terrain. It is based on the idea of simultaneously storing a graph in 3D space and its dual graph, and to link the two. We propose Euler-type operators for incrementally constructing 3D models (for adding individual edges, faces and volumes to the model while updating the dual structure simultaneously), and we also propose navigation operators to move from a given point to all the connected planes or polyhedra for example. The DHE also permits us to store attributes to any element. We have implemented the DHE and have tested it with different CityGML models. Our technique allows us to handle important query types, for example finding the nearest exterior exit to a given room, as in disaster management planning. As the structure is locally modifiable the model may be adapted whenever a particular pathway is no longer available. The proposed DHE structure adds significant analytic value to the increasingly popular CityGML model. [Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a multi-scale method that computes robust geometric features on lidar point clouds in order to retrieve the optimal neighborhood size for each point. Three dimensionality features are calculated on spherical neighborhoods at various radius sizes. Based on combinations of the eigenvalues of the local structure tensor, they describe the shape of the neighborhood, indicating whether the local geometry is more linear (1D), planar (2D) or volumetric (3D). Two radius-selection criteria have been tested and compared for finding automatically the optimal neighborhood radius for each point. Besides, such procedure allows a dimensionality labelling, giving significant hints for classification and segmentation purposes. The method is successfully applied to 3D point clouds from airborne, terrestrial, and mobile mapping systems since no a priori knowledge on the distribution of the 3D points is required. Extracted dimensionality features and labellings are then favorably compared to those computed from constant size neighborhoods.
