Such an estimate resolves, in principle, the ‘ambiguity’ of a traditional crust-fixed LVD by linking it with a particular equipotential surface of Earth’s gravity field under the presence of an external geopotential model. The aim of this paper is to study the estimation scheme that can be followed for solving the aforementioned problem based on the joint inversion of co-located GPS and leveling heights in conjunction with a fixed Earth gravity field model. Several case studies with real data are also presented that provide, for the first time, precise estimates of the LVD offsets for a number of Hellenic islands across the Aegean and Ionian Sea. Note de contenu : 1- Introduction

[Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (auteur) For geodetic and geophysical purposes, such as geoid determination or the study of the Earth’s structure, heterogeneous gravity datasets of various origins need to be combined over an area of interest, in order to derive a local gravity model at the highest possible resolution. The quality of the obtained gravity model strongly depends on the use of appropriate noise models for the different datasets in the combination process. In addition to random errors, those datasets are indeed often affected by systematic biases and correlated errors. Here we show how wavelets can be used to realize such combination in a flexible and economic way, and how the use of domain decomposition approaches allows to recalibrate the noise models in different wavebands and for different areas. We represent the gravity potential as a linear combination of Poisson multipole wavelets (Holschneider et al. 2003). We compute the wavelet model of the gravity field by regularized least-squares adjustment of the datasets. To solve the normal system, we apply the Schwarz iterative algorithms, based on a domain decomposition of the models space. Hierarchical scale subdomains are defined as subsets of wavelets at different scales, and for each scale, block subdomains are defined based on spatial splittings of the area. In the computation process, the data weights can be refined for each subdomain, allowing to take into account the effect of correlated noises in a simple way. Similarly, the weight of the regularization can be recalibrated for each subdomain, introducing non-stationarity in the a priori assumption of smoothness of the gravity field. We show and discuss examples of application of this method for regional gravity field modelling over a test area in Japan. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (auteur) With the advent of satellite gravity, large gravity data sets of unprecedented quality at low and medium resolution become available. For local, high resolution field modelling, they need to be combined with the surface gravity data. Such models are then used for various applications, from the study of the Earth interior to the determination of oceanic currents. Here we show how to realize such a combination in a flexible way using spherical wavelets and applying a domain decomposition approach. This iterative method, based on the Schwarz algorithms, allows to split a large problem into smaller ones, and avoids the calculation of the entire normal system, which may be huge if high resolution is sought over wide areas. A subdomain is defined as the harmonic space spanned by a subset of the wavelet family. Based on the localization properties of the wavelets in space and frequency, we define hierarchical subdomains of wavelets at different scales. On each scale, blocks of subdomains are defined by using a tailored spatial splitting of the area. The data weighting and regularization are iteratively adjusted for the subdomains, which allows to handle heterogeneity in the data quality or the gravity variations. Different levels of approximations of the subdomains normals are also introduced, corresponding to building local averages of the data at different resolution levels. We first provide the theoretical background on domain decomposition methods. Then, we validate the method with synthetic data, considering two kinds of noise: white noise and coloured noise. We then apply the method to data over Japan, where we combine a satellite-based geopotential model, EIGEN-GL04S, and a local gravity model from a combination of land and marine gravity data and an altimetry-derived marine gravity model. A hybrid spherical harmonics/wavelet model of the geoid is obtained at about 15 km resolution and a corrector grid for the surface model is derived. [Termes IGN] valeur efficaceRésumé : (Auteur) This study demonstrates that in mountainous areas the use of residual terrain model (RTM) data significantly improves the accuracy of vertical deflections obtained from high-degree spherical harmonic synthesis. The new Earth gravitational model EGM2008 is used to compute vertical deflections up to a spherical harmonic degree of 2,160. RTM data can be constructed as difference between high-resolution Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) elevation data and the terrain model DTM2006.0 (a spherical harmonic terrain model that complements EGM2008) providing the long-wavelength reference surface. Because these RTM elevations imply most of the gravity field signal beyond spherical harmonic degree of 2,160, they can be used to augment EGM2008 vertical deflection predictions in the very high spherical harmonic degrees. In two mountainous test areas—the German and the Swiss Alps—the combined use of EGM2008 and RTM data was successfully tested at 223 stations with high-precision astrogeodetic vertical deflections from recent zenith camera observations (accuracy of about 0.1 arc seconds) available. The comparison of EGM2008 vertical deflections with the ground-truth astrogeodetic observations shows root mean square (RMS) values (from differences) of 3.5 arc seconds for È and 3.2 arc seconds for È , respectively. Using a combination of EGM2008 and RTM data for the prediction of vertical deflections considerably reduces the RMS values to the level of 0.8 arc seconds for both vertical deflection components, which is a significant improvement of about 75%. Density anomalies of the real topography with respect to the residual model topography are one factor limiting the accuracy of the approach. The proposed technique for vertical deflection predictions is based on three publicly available data sets: (1) EGM2008, (2) DTM2006.0 and (3) SRTM elevation data. This allows replication of the approach for improving the accuracy of EGM2008 vertical deflection predictions in regions with a rough topography or for improved validation of EGM2008 and future high-degree spherical harmonic models by means of independent ground truth data.
