[Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (auteur) LiDAR full-waveform (LFW) pulse density is not homogeneous along study areas due to overlap between contiguous flight stripes and, to a lesser extent, variations in height, velocity and altitude of the platform. As a result, LFW-derived metrics extracted at the same spot but at different pulse densities differ, which is called “side-lap effect”. Moreover, this effect is reflected in forest stand estimates, since they are predicted from LFW-derived metrics. This study was undertaken to analyze LFW-derived metric variations according to pulse density, voxel size and value assignation method in order to reduce the side-lap effect. Thirty LiDAR samples with a minimum density of 16 pulses.m−2 were selected from the testing area and randomly reduced to 2 pulses.m−2 with an interval of 1 pulse.m−2, then metrics were extracted and compared for each sample and pulse density at different voxel sizes and assignation values. Results show that LFW-derived metric variations as a function of pulse density follow a negative exponential model similar to the exponential semivariogram curve, increasing sharply until they reach a certain pulse density, where they become stable. This value represents the minimum pulse density (MPD) in the study area to optimally minimize the side-lap effect. This effect can also be reduced with pulse densities lower than the MPD modifying LFW parameters (i.e. voxel size and assignation value). Results show that LFW-derived metrics are not equally influenced by pulse density, such as number of peaks (NP) and ROUGHness of the outermost canopy (ROUGH) that may be discarded for further analyses at large voxel sizes, given that they are highly influenced by pulse density. In addition, side-lap effect can be reduced by either increasing pulse density or voxel size, or modifying the assignation value. In practice, this leads to a proper estimate of forest stand variables using LFW data. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) The existing binary voxel model algorithm for 3D building detection (3BD) from airborne lidar cannot distinguish between connected buildings and non‐buildings. As a result, a greyscale voxel structure model, using the discretised mean intensity of lidar points, is presented to support subsequent building detection in areas where buildings are adjacent to non‐buildings but with different greyscales. The resulting 3BD algorithm first detects a building roof by selecting voxels characterised by a jump in elevation as seeds, labelling them and their 3D connected regions as rooftop voxels. Then voxels which fall into buffers and possess similar greyscales to that of the corresponding building outline are assigned as building façades. The results for detected buildings are evaluated using lidar data with different densities and demonstrate a high rate of success. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) The material distribution inside tree crowns is difficult to quantify even though it is an important variable in forest management and ecology. The vertical distribution of a relative density index (i.e., vertical profile) of the total, woody, and leafy material at the crown scale were estimated from terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) data on two species, sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) and balsam fir (Abies Balsamea Mill.). An algorithm based on a geometrical approach readily available in the Computree open source platform was used. Beta distributions were then fitted to the vertical profiles and compared to each other. Total and leafy profiles had similar shapes, while woody profiles were different. Thus, the total vertical distribution could be a good proxy for the leaf distribution in the crown. Sugar maple and balsam fir had top heavy and bottom heavy distributions respectively, which can be explained by their respective architectural development. Moreover, the foliage distribution of sugar maples shifted towards the crown base when it was found in mixed stands, when compared to pure stands. The opposite behavior was observed for balsam firs, but less pronounced. According to the shape of the foliage distribution, sugar maple takes advantages from mixture contrarily to balsam fir. From a methodological point of view, we proposed an original approach to separate wood from leaf returns in TLS data while taking into account occlusion. Wood and leaf separation and occlusion problems are two challenging issues for most TLS-based studies in forest ecology. Contrary to the majority of existing methods, we focus not only on trajectory estimation accuracy, but also on reconstruction precision. The key technique is SDF-2-SDF registration, which is a correspondence-free, symmetric, dense energy minimization method, performed via the direct voxel-wise difference between a pair of signed distance fields. It has a wider convergence basin than traditional point cloud registration and cloud-to-volume alignment techniques. Furthermore, its formulation allows for straightforward incorporation of photometric and additional geometric constraints. We employ SDF-2-SDF registration in two applications. First, we perform small-to-medium scale object reconstruction entirely on the CPU. To this end, the camera is tracked frame-to-frame in real time. Then, the initial pose estimates are refined globally in a lightweight optimization framework, which does not involve a pose graph. We combine these procedures into our second, fully real-time application for larger-scale object reconstruction and SLAM. It is implemented as a hybrid system, whereby tracking is done on the GPU, while refinement runs concurrently over batches on the CPU. To bound memory and runtime footprints, registration is done over a fixed number of limited-extent volumes, anchored at geometry-rich locations. Extensive qualitative and quantitative evaluation of both trajectory accuracy and model fidelity on several public RGB-D datasets, acquired with various quality sensors, demonstrates higher precision than related techniques. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (auteur) In this paper, we report a novel strategy for segmenting 3D point clouds using a voxel structure and graph-based clustering with perceptual grouping laws. It provides a completely automatic solution for partitioning point clouds of man-made infrastructure. Two different segmentation methods using voxel and supervoxel structures are presented and evaluated. To increase the efficiency and the robustness of the segmentation process, the voxelization with octree-based structure is introduced, which can suppress effects of noise, outliers, and unevenly distributed point densities as well. The clustering of over-segmented voxels and supervoxels is achieved using graph theory on the basis of the local contextual information, which is commonly conducted merely with pairwise information in conventional clustering algorithms. The graphical model is constructed according to perceptual grouping laws, considering geometric information associated with points. Experiments using both laser scanning and photogrammetric point clouds have demonstrated that the proposed methods can achieve good results, especially complex scenes and nonplanar object surfaces, with F1-measures better than 0.67 for all the testing samples. Quantitative comparisons between the proposed approaches and other representative segmentation methods also confirm the effectiveness and the efficiency of the former. Moreover, a series of experiments is carried out, to investigate the methods' sensitivity with respect to various parameters on the segmentation results.
