[Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) Archaeological recording of structures and excavations in high mountain areas is greatly hindered by the scarce availability of both space, to transport material, and time. The Madriu-Perafita-Claror, InterAmbAr and PCR Mont Lozère high mountain projects have documented hundreds of archaeological structures and carried out many archaeological excavations. These projects required the development of a technique which could record both structures and the process of an archaeological excavation in a fast and reliable manner. The combination of DGPS, close-range terrestrial stereophotogrammetry and voxel based GIS modelling offered a perfect solution since it helped in developing a strategy which would obtain all the required data on-site fast and with a high degree of precision. These data are treated off-site to obtain georeferenced orthoimages covering both the structures and the excavation process from which site and excavation plans can be created. The proposed workflow outputs also include digital surface models and volumetric models of the excavated areas from which topography and archaeological profiles were obtained by voxel-based GIS procedures. In this way, all the graphic recording required by standard archaeological practices was met. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) Estimates of solar radiation distribution in urban areas are often limited by the complexity of urban environments. These limitations arise from spatial structures such as buildings and trees that affect spatial and temporal distributions of solar fluxes over urban surfaces. The traditional solar radiation models implemented in GIS can address this problem only partially. They can be adequately used only for 2-D surfaces such as terrain and rooftops. However, vertical surfaces, such as facades, require a 3-D approach. This study presents a new 3-D solar radiation model for urban areas represented by 3-D city models. The v.sun module implemented in GRASS GIS is based on the existing solar radiation methodology used in the topographic r.sun model with a new capability to process 3-D vector data representing complex urban environments. The calculation procedure is based on the combined vector-voxel approach segmenting the 3-D vector objects to smaller polygon elements according to a voxel data structure of the volume region. The shadowing effects of surrounding objects are considered using a unique shadowing algorithm. The proposed model has been applied to the sample urban area with results showing strong spatial and temporal variations of solar radiation flows over complex urban surfaces. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) For a fundamental understanding of environmental processes and for the management of forests, information on the tree structure, preferably in 3D, is vital. Therefore, we propose a method to retrieve the spatial tree structure from 3D point clouds captured by a terrestrial laser scanner. The procedure addresses dense and noisy data sets of separate trees. Our method involves a variation of the Circular Hough Transform to determine trunk positions and a sequence of operations in voxel space. The core of the approach is the depth-first search algorithm, known from graph theory, to actually recover the tree as a graph. Furthermore, we compare results obtained from the tree graph to reference measurements of forest inventory parameters. The computation time of our method for topology representation is low and the method provides a reasonably accurate approximation of the 3D tree structure. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) The paper presents improved photogrammetric techniques for the determination of 3D flow velocity fields with the goal of optimising the performance, efficiency and flexibility of the method. This includes a multi-camera system configuration and calibration, as well as approaches for volumetric reconstruction. The result of the volumetric reconstruction process is a time-resolved, voxel-space representation of tracer particles marking a flow. Using a high-speed camera, a typical data-set consists of 1000 volumetric data-sets per second, each with 1000 x 1000 x 300 voxels. 3D tracking in the time-resolved voxel data is performed by 3D least squares tracking, determining 12 parameters of a 3D affine transformation between cuboids in successive voxel data-sets. Besides the cuboid translation, these parameters also include information on the shear tensor of each cuboid. The tomographic reconstruction methods and the cuboid tracking have been implemented and validated with both simulated and real data in an experimental set-up of a vortex ring in a water tank. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) Water vapor is a key variable in numerical weather prediction, as it plays an important role in atmospheric processes. Nonetheless, the distribution of water vapor in the atmosphere is observed with a coarse resolution in time and space compared to the resolution of numerical weather models. GPS water vapor tomography is one of the promising methods to improve the resolution of water vapor measurements. This paper presents new parameterized approaches for the determination of water vapor distribution in the troposphere by GPS. We present the methods and give first results validating the approaches. The parameterization of voxels (volumetric pixels) by trilinear and spline functions in ellipsoidal coordinates are introduced in this study. The evolution in time of the refractivity field is modeled by a Kalman filter with a temporal resolution of 30s, which corresponds to the available GPS-data rate. The algorithms are tested with simulated and with real data from more than 40 permanent GPS receiver stations in Switzerland and adjoining regions covering alpine areas. The investigations show the potential of the new parameterized approaches to yield superior results compared to the non parametric classical one. The accuracy of the tomographic result is quantified by the inter-quartile range (IQR), which is decreased by 10–20% with the new approaches. Further, parameterized voxel solutions have a substantially smaller maximal error than the non parameterized ones. Simulations show a limited ability to resolve vertical structures above the top station of the network with GPS tomography.
