[Termes IGN] orthophotoplan numériqueRésumé : (Auteur) A novel seam detection approach based on vector building maps is presented for low-attitude aerial orthoimage mosaicking. The approach tracks the centerlines between vector buildings to generate the candidate seams that avoid crossing buildings existing in maps. The candidate seams are then refined by considering their surrounding pixels to minimize the visual transition between the images to be mosaicked. After the refinement of the candidate seams, the final seams further bypass most of the buildings that are not updated into vector maps. Finally, three groups of aerial imagery from different urban densities are employed to test the proposed approach. The experimental results illustrate the advantages of the proposed approach in avoiding the crossing of buildings. The computational efficiency of the proposed approach is also significantly higher than that of Dijkstra’s algorithm.

[Termes IGN] zone tamponRésumé : (Auteur) Creating a composed image from a set of aerial images is a fundamental step in orthomosaic generation. One of the processes involved in this technique is determining an optimal seamline in an overlapping region to stitch image patches seamlessly. Most previous studies have solved this optimization problem by searching for a one-pixel-wide seamline with an objective function. This strategy significantly reduced pixel mismatches on the seamline caused by geometric distortions of images but did not fully consider color discontinuity and mismatch problems that occur around the seamline, which sometimes cause mosaicking artifacts. This study proposes a blending zone determination scheme with a novel path finding algorithm to reduce the occurrence of unwanted artifacts. Instead of searching for a one-pixel-wide seamline, a blending zone, which is a k-pixel-wide seamline that passes through high-similarity pixels in the overlapping region, is determined using a hierarchical structure. This strategy allows for not only seamless stitching but also smooth color blending of neighboring image patches. Moreover, the proposed method searches for a blending zone without the pre-process of highly mismatched pixel removal and additional geographic data of road vectors and digital surface/elevation models, which increases the usability of the approach. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of aerial images demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method to related methods in terms of avoidance of passing highly mismatched pixels. [Termes IGN] Normalized Difference Vegetation IndexRésumé : (auteur) Landsat imagery mosaics developed using model II regression have been shown to successfully model percent tree-canopy cover (PTCC). Creating model II regression mosaics, however, is a time-consuming, manual process. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of using more easily automated image composites techniques, such as median Landsat-5 image composites or maximum NDVI Landsat-5 image composites, as alternatives to model II regression mosaics for the modeling of PTCC. This study found all composite types were effective in modeling PTCC, but the maximum NDVI composites included anomalies, clouds, shadows, and tended to be pixelated, whereas the median composites and the model II regression mosaics had none of these issues. The median composite procedure is automated and was found to be an effective approach to statistically reduce a much larger ensemble of images on a pixel basis to create images suitable for vegetation modeling. [Termes IGN] réalité de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) Nadir viewing satellite image is an effective data source to generate orthomosaics. Because of the georeferencing error of satellite images, block adjustment is the first step of orthomosaic generation over a large area. However, the geometric relationship of the neighboring orbits of the nadir viewing images is not rigid enough. This paper proposes a new rational function model (RFM) block adjustment approach that constrains the tie point elevation to enhance the relative geometric rigidity. By interpolating the elevations of tie points in a digital elevation model (DEM) and estimating the a priori errors of the interpolated elevations, better overall relative accuracy is obtained, and the local optimal solution problem is avoided. By constraining the adjusted model parameters according to the a priori error of RFMs, block adjustment without ground control point (GCP) is performed. By optimal initializing the object-space positions of tie points with multi-backprojection method, the needed iteration times of block adjustment are reduced. The proposed approach is investigated with 46 Ziyuan-3 sensor-corrected images, a 1:50 000 scale DEM, and 586 GCPs. Compared with Teo's approach that constrains the horizontal coordinates and elevations of tie points, the approach in this paper converges much faster when the GCPs are sparse, and meanwhile, the absolute and relative accuracy of the two approaches are almost the same. The result of block adjustment with only four GCPs shows that no accuracy degeneration occurred in the test area and the root-mean-square error of independent check point reaches about 1.5 ground resolutions. Different DEMs and number of tie points are used to investigate whether the block adjustment result is influenced by these factors. The results show that better DEM accuracy and denser tie points do improve the accuracy when the images have large side-sway angles. The proposed approach is also tested with 5118 IKONOS-2 images that cover the southern Europe without GCP. The result shows that the relative mosaicking accuracy is much better than that of Grodecki's approach.
