[Termes IGN] photographie aérienneRésumé : (Auteur) Within the article a low-cost system for the provision of georeferenced terrestrial images in urban environments is presented. Based on an image with appro ximate exterior orientation from a low-cost GPS and a digital compass and a 3D CAD model of a visible model, as provided from an 3D virtual city model, the exact location of t he building in the image is detected automatically and used, for a refined orientation of the image. The work presented in this paper is part of a project aiming on the development of a mobile device, which enables access to location based services in a complex urban environment. The intuitive access to object related information is realised by so-called telepointing. For that purposes, a spatial model of the user's environment is mapped to the oriented image in order to allow the access to object related information by pointing to the respective image sections. The image is captured by a camera, which will be integrated to a mobile device. Since the provision of location based services currently is one of the most promising markets for the application of spatial data as they are collected by photogrammetric techniques, these applications will also, be discussed briefly, within the paper. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Detailed vegetation databases and associated maps of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a rugged, forested area of more than 2000 km2, were constructed to support resource management activities of the U.S. National Park Service (NPS). These detailed vegetation databases and associated maps have a terrain relief exceeding 1700 m and a continuous forest cover over 95% of the Park. The requirement to use 1:12,000 and 1:40,000scale color infrared aerial photographs as the primary data source for mapping overstory and understory vegetation, respectively, necessitated the integration of analog photointerpretation with both digital softcopy photogrammetry and geographic information system (GIS) procedures to overcome problems associated with excessive terrain relief and a lack of ground control. Applications of the vegetation database and associated largescale maps include assessments of vegetation patterns related to management activities and quantification of forest fire fuels. [Termes IGN] photographie à grande échelleRésumé : (Auteur) A fast growing world population, expansion in urban, suburban and rural regions and steadily increasing human activity on land all contribute to the call for more detailed, diverse and current geo-information in its full spatial and time dimensions. This strengthens the role of photogrammetry, especially in its high potential for geo-information production from large scale, high-resolution images. The author focuses on factors affecting the effectiveness of this production process. [Termes IGN] précision de localisationRésumé : (Auteur) An empirical investigation into the effects of JPEG compression on the accuracy of photogrammetric point determination (PPD) is described. A pair of black-and-white aerial photographs of a city, taken at a scale of 1:8000, was selected and scanned at a resolution of 25 m. Eighteen image points were measured with the ISDM module of an Intergraph digital photogrammetric workstation (DPW), and the bundle adjustment of a single model was performed using WuGAPSsGps (Wuhan GPSsupported bundle block adjustment software). In processing various JPEG compressed images with Q-factors from I to 100, the accuracy of the 3D coordinates of the pass points was assessed and compared with that obtained from the original images (i.e., without compression). The empirical results show that, when the compression ratios are under 10, the compressed image is near-lossless. In other words, the visual quality of JPEG compressed images is still excellent and the accuracy of manual image mensuration is essentially not influenced. However, no indication can be found from the results that a compression of 10 is the critical value or the optimum compression level for PPD. Indeed, it is clear that the degradation of accuracy in PPD is almost linear.
