[Termes IGN] trace numériqueRésumé : (Auteur) Researchers at Ghent University in Belgium are using Bluetooth scanners to reconstruct the path of moving persons. Everyone with a Bluetooth-enable phone is participant in their research and will be tracked. Tracking and tracing has been a hot topic in retail for several decades. It now seems that tracking of pedestrians and vehicules is also becoming a booming business. [Termes IGN] représentation mentale spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) A key strength of a map for navigation is that it can show the features of an environment and their spatial relationships over an area too large to be perceived through direct experience. This characteristic is important for navigation, including planning travel, making decisions while en route, and developing a user's cognitive map. But what happens on a small display, such as that of a cell phone, when, instead of seeing the entire area of interest, the user can view only a discrete section of the map at any time? This article presents research investigating the implications of a small display for map use and spatial knowledge acquisition. A research study was conducted with 80 participants using a map to answer distance and direction questions in one of four viewable-extent conditions, ranging from 10°/o to 100% of the map viewable at a time. Map-use results showed that small viewable extents hindered performance with respect to accuracy and response time but had no effect on participants' confidence in their performance on the navigation tasks. Tests of spatial knowledge acquisition showed differences across conditions for recall tasks, but a sketch-map analysis revealed no differences based on viewable extent. [Termes IGN] navigation automobileRésumé : (Auteur) Today's map navigation software offers more and more functionality. For example, it cannot only route from a start to a destination address, but the user can also specify a number of via destinations that are to be visited along the route. What is not commonly found in the software is the handling of so-called stopover areas. Here the user specifies a sequence of geographic areas and wants the route to lead into or through each of these areas (but he does not actually care where exactly). A modification of the well-known A* algorithm that considers convex stopover areas is presented. Algorithmic variants and implementation issues are discussed. Example results on a real-world data set are presented for the case of axis parallel rectangular stopover areas.
