[Termes IGN] sinuositéRésumé : (Auteur) This paper analyses the structure of roads (directed) and the pedestrian (undirected) networks in Lausanne (Switzerland). Centrality and sinuosity indexes are computed to perform spatial analysis at various scales. The study shows that the sinuosity index varies a lot at local (pedestrian) scale. The link between these variations and the underlying street patterns is investigated. The method also suggests that the comparison between Euclidean and shortest path distances can be used to improve pedestrian network by creating promising shortcuts, or alternatively to detect major network topological errors. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This study focuses on the information content of the geospatial databases used to guide pedestrians as well as those with disabilities. In this paper, we introduce an information model for describing this content. The model covers the physical environment faced by a person moving on foot. We have used the Unified Modeling Language class diagrams to formalize the information model on a conceptual level. The features are divided into two abstract top-level classes: one allowing pedestrian access and the other hindering it. A consistent and comprehensive pedestrian network is at the core of the model. The model also covers other geographical information to increase accessibility. The aim of the created information model is to help data providers to collect and store appropriate data using the appropriate methods. This inverts the traditional top-down geospatial data production and distribution methods by emphasizing on the participation of the end user or community. The technique has been shown to be particularly useful in the domain of accessibility mapping, where it can augment traditional mapping methods and systems by providing information about transitory obstacles in the built environment. This research paper presents details of techniques and applications of crowdsourcing and related methods for improving the presence of transitory obstacles in accessibility mapping systems. The obstacles are very difficult to incorporate with any other traditional mapping workflow, since they typically appear in an unplanned manner and disappear just as quickly. Nevertheless, these obstacles present a major impediment to navigating an unfamiliar environment. Fortunately, these obstacles can be reported, defined, and captured through a variety of crowdsourcing techniques, including gazetteer-based geoparsing and active social media harvesting, and then referenced in a crowdsourced mapping system. These techniques are presented, along with context from research in tactile cartography and geo-enabled accessibility systems. The immeasurable distortions of illustrated maps create difficulties when applying them in location-based services. Based on previous research, the authors propose an improved framework for supporting illustrated maps to be integrated with GPS functions in smartphones, and positioning methods are discussed. Mobile tools and applications have been developed with the purpose of making it easy to create and use digital content based on illustrated maps for walking tours. The usability and effectiveness were tested in experiments and practical use. [Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) Indoor map design is still an uncharted territory. More often than not, existing architectural floor plans are used as visualization means that do not fulfill cartographic requirements. In collaboration between geoinformation science and sociology, we develop and investigate cartographic methods for effective route guidance in indoor environments. The baseline for our evaluation is the annual user studies with up to 1100 participants per year. Since 2009, they were conducted during the “Long Night of Sciences,” a big event where large scientific institutions present themselves to the general public. For the 2011 study, we developed eight maps, which varied in design with respect to two map properties: map perspective and landmark representation. We evaluated the map design features as well as route complexity and sociodemographic characteristics. In order to rate their effect on an user satisfaction as an indicator of navigational success, we carried out a series of analyses of variance. Our results underline the importance of a map design: Map perspective and landmarks alone explain about 30% of the variance in the user satisfaction with maps, which is by far the biggest share in a navigational success.
