[Termes IGN] sémiologie graphiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Geospatial data are now widely available to the general public thanks to geoportals and online mapping platforms. However, creating a map involves more than just combining data layers. Thus we develop cartographic functions for geoportals to support better visual hierarchy in user map mashups. This includes a couple of preparatory steps followed by a smart cartographic background symbolization derived from the original layer style. We evaluate different approaches to background symbolization: greyscale, desaturation, and smart background. The different background symbolization methods are analysed with two concrete map examples and evaluated with a survey. The smart background symbolization developed in this work improves the visual hierarchy of the map mashup by reducing the visual importance of the background layers. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) The existing binary voxel model algorithm for 3D building detection (3BD) from airborne lidar cannot distinguish between connected buildings and non‐buildings. As a result, a greyscale voxel structure model, using the discretised mean intensity of lidar points, is presented to support subsequent building detection in areas where buildings are adjacent to non‐buildings but with different greyscales. The resulting 3BD algorithm first detects a building roof by selecting voxels characterised by a jump in elevation as seeds, labelling them and their 3D connected regions as rooftop voxels. Then voxels which fall into buffers and possess similar greyscales to that of the corresponding building outline are assigned as building façades. The results for detected buildings are evaluated using lidar data with different densities and demonstrate a high rate of success. [Termes IGN] niveau de gris (image)Résumé : (Auteur) The classification of a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image is a significant yet challenging task, due to the presence of speckle noises and the absence of effective feature representation. Inspired by deep learning technology, a novel deep supervised and contractive neural network (DSCNN) for SAR image classification is proposed to overcome these problems. In order to extract spatial features, a multiscale patch-based feature extraction model that consists of gray level-gradient co-occurrence matrix, Gabor, and histogram of oriented gradient descriptors is developed to obtain primitive features from the SAR image. Then, to get discriminative representation of initial features, the DSCNN network that comprises four layers of supervised and contractive autoencoders is proposed to optimize features for classification. The supervised penalty of the DSCNN can capture the relevant information between features and labels, and the contractive restriction aims to enhance the locally invariant and robustness of the encoding representation. Consequently, the DSCNN is able to produce effective representation of sample features and provide superb predictions of the class labels. Moreover, to restrain the influence of speckle noises, a graph-cut-based spatial regularization is adopted after classification to suppress misclassified pixels and smooth the results. Experiments on three SAR data sets demonstrate that the proposed method is able to yield superior classification performance compared with some related approaches. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Morphological attribute profiles are among the most prominent spectral-spatial pixel description methods. They are efficient, effective, and highly customizable multiscale tools based on hierarchical representations of a scalar input image. Their application to multivariate images in general and hyperspectral images in particular has been so far conducted using the marginal strategy, i.e., by processing each image band (eventually obtained through a dimension reduction technique) independently. In this paper, we investigate the alternative vector strategy, which consists in processing the available image bands simultaneously. The vector strategy is based on a vector-ordering relation that leads to the computation of a single max and min tree per hyperspectral data set, from which attribute profiles can then be computed as usual. We explore known vector-ordering relations for constructing such max trees and, subsequently, vector attribute profiles and introduce a combination of marginal and vector strategies. We provide an experimental comparison of these approaches in the context of hyperspectral classification with common data sets, where the proposed approach outperforms the widely used marginal strategy.
