[Termes IGN] reconnaissance de formesRésumé : (Auteur) In this article, a new algorithm for determining differences between two sets of polygons is considered. It has been proven that it is enough to test only the polygon edges to perform the comparison. The algorithm works in two steps. First, the polygon edges are initialised into a data structure and equal edges are eliminated by a simple criterion. In the second part, the algorithm analyses the remaining edges and prepares a report about the detected differences. To speed-up the geometric search, the algorithm uses a combination of a uniform space subdivision and binary searching trees. It has been shown that the algorithm is numerically stable, and works well with a limited set of non-simple polygons from a land cadastre. The algorithm's time complexity is O(n log n), and space complexity O(n), where n is the common number of edges in both sets of polygons. This is been confirmed by experiments using data sets from the land cadastre. [Termes IGN] reconnaissance de formesRésumé : (Auteur) Growing concerns about global climate change, biodiversity maintenance, natural resources conservation, and long-term ecosystem sustainability have been responsible for the transformation of traditional single resource management approaches into integrated ecosystem management models. Eco-regions are large ecosystems of regional extent that contain smaller ecosystems of similar response potential and resource production capabilities. They can be used as a geographical framework for organizing and reporting resource information, setting bioecological recovery criteria, extrapolating site-level management, and monitoring global change. The objective of this research is to develop a quantitative, multivariate regionalization model that is capable of delineating eco-regions at multiple levels from remotely sensed information and other environmental and natural resources spatial data. The Spatial Pattern Analysis Model developed in this study uses a region-growing algorithm to generate spatially contiguous regions from primitive polygonal land units. The algorithm merges the most similar pair of neighbouring units at each iteration, based on satisfying certain similarity criteria until all units are grouped into one. This model was utilized to develop an eco-region map of Nebraska with three hierarchical levels. In the mapping process, the STATSGO data set was used to build the primitive map units. Environmental parameters included in the model were multi-temporal AVHRR data, soil rooting depth, organic matter content, available water capacity, and long-term annual averages of water balance and growing degree day totals. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Snakes are iterative energy-minimizing splines controlled by both internal constraint forces (internal energy) and external forces (external energy). This paper investigates the use of snakes for the resolution of conflicts in polygonal subdivisions (i.e., polygon maps or polygon mosaics) resulting from the violation of metric constraints which exist if a polygonal object is too small, too narrow, or too close to another polygon. Such metric conflicts are denoted as size and proximity conflicts. In the generalization of polygonal subdivisions, internal energy reflects the resistance of an object to deformation and external energy describes the need for generalization. This paper suggests the usage of a snakes-based algorithm which is triggered in such a way that it achieves the translation, a local and global increase (or decrease) of polygons, or an arbitrary combination of these transformations, depending on the conflicts encountered. Hence, size and proximity conflicts within a group of polygons can be solved simultaneously and holistically. Furthermore, snakes support the propagation of a change of a polygon's geometry to all adjacent neighbors. The proposed algorithm has been implemented in a prototype system that also supports a variety of other polygon generalization algorithms. The main difficulties identified are the intricate setup and finetuning of the snakes parameters and the computer resources required by the algorithm. However, the experiments showed that the proposed algorithm is a valuable method for the automated generalization of polygonal subdivisions. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper addresses the problems associated with the integration of data between incongruent boundary systems. Currently, the majority of spatial boundaries are designed in an uncoordinated manner with individual organizations generating individual boundaries to meet individual needs. As a result, current technologies for analysing geospatial information, such as geographical information systems (GISs), are not reaching their full potential. In response to the problem of uncoordinated boundaries, the authors present an algorithm for the hierarchical structuring of administrative boundaries. This algorithm applies hierarchical spatial reasoning (HSR) theory to the automated structuring of polygons. In turn, these structured boundary systems facilitate accurate data integration and analysis whilst meeting the spatial requirements of selected agencies. The algorithm is presented in two parts. The first part outlines previous research undertaken by the authors into the delineation of administrative boundaries in metropolitan regions. The second part outlines the distinctly different constraints required for administrativeboundary design in rural areas. The development of the algorithm has taken place in a GIS environment utilizing Avenue, an objectorientated programming language that operates under ArcView, the desktop software developed and distributed by ESRI. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Urban area building extraction is one of the most challenging problems in photogrammetry. Wellextracted buildings are needed for a variety of applications, such as cartography, building GIS databases for cities, and urban planning. This paper presents a new technique to extract 3D building wireframes using a robust multiimage linematching algorithm. Although one pair of images is adequate to find the 3D position of two visibly corresponding image, features, it is not sufficient to solve the general building extraction problem due to obscured parts in the building. Four images are used in this research to extract the building wireframes. First the images are segmented into regions. Regions are then classified into roof regions and nonroof regions based on their size, shape, and intensity values. The roof region boundary pixels are located and used to find the region perimeters. Region correspondence is solved in a pairwise mode over all images using the epipolar constraint, region size, region shape, and region intensity values. Image lines within the corresponding regions are matched over all images simultaneously by first creating a plane for each region line. Planes are then intersected simultaneously and geometric consistency is used to determine acceptance or rejection. Results with high overlap and sidelap aerial images are presented and evaluated. The results show the completeness and accuracy that this method can provide for extracting complex urban buildings. The average coordinate accuracy is about 08 m using 1:4000 scale aerial photographs scanned at 30 um Six buildings were examined; the line detection rate is 98%.
