[Termes IGN] zone urbaine denseRésumé : (Auteur) Impervious surface estimation has been widely conducted with medium-high resolution optical imagery. Challenges however, remain in aspects of spectral similarity of different objects, mixed pixel, and shadows of tall buildings or large tree crowns. In order to reduce these uncertainties, this study explores the synergistic use of optical and radar remote sensing datasets in highly populated urban areas. A comparative analysis is performed between the RADARSAT-2 full POLSAR image and the SPOTS optical image. For both datasets, the C5.0 decision tree algorithm is applied to select features extracted to build a decision tree for urban impervious surface classification. It is found in this study that optical and POLSAR images possess different merits in delineating urban land surfaces. The POLSAR data is helpful for delineating bright impervious surfaces (e.g., buildings) and bare soils, which is often a difficult task for optical data. However, the confusion between dark impervious surfaces and bare soils becomes a severe problem due to similar surface scattering mechanisms. The intrinsic characteristics of radar scattering (e.g., layover and shadow effects) also result in high uncertainties in dense urban areas. These problems are leveraged when both optical and decomposed POLSAR features are considered. The results from this study indicate that the synergistic use of optical and POLSAR data could be an efficient approach to improving the estimation of urban impervious surfaces. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Urban impervious surface information is essential for urban and environmental applications at the regional/national scales. As a popular image processing technique, spectral mixture analysis (SMA) has rarely been applied to coarse-resolution imagery due to the difficulty of deriving endmember spectra using traditional endmember selection methods, particularly within heterogeneous urban environments. To address this problem, we derived endmember signatures through a least squares solution (LSS) technique with known abundances of sample pixels, and integrated these endmember signatures into SMA for mapping large-scale impervious surface fraction. In addition, with the same sample set, we carried out objective comparative analyses among SMA (i.e. fully constrained and unconstrained SMA) and machine learning (i.e. Cubist regression tree and Random Forests) techniques. Analysis of results suggests three major conclusions. First, with the extrapolated endmember spectra from stratified random training samples, the SMA approaches performed relatively well, as indicated by small MAE values. Second, Random Forests yields more reliable results than Cubist regression tree, and its accuracy is improved with increased sample sizes. Finally, comparative analyses suggest a tentative guide for selecting an optimal approach for large-scale fractional imperviousness estimation: unconstrained SMA might be a favorable option with a small number of samples, while Random Forests might be preferred if a large number of samples are available. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) The advance in remote sensing technology makes people easily assess urban growth. In this study, a multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis (MESMA) was examined in a sub-pixel analysis of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery to map three physical components of urban land cover (LC): impervious surface, vegetation and soil, and compared with a traditional spectral mixture analysis (SMA) in mapping the physical components. A comparative analysis of the impervious surface areas (ISA) mapped with MESMA and SMA indicates that MESMA produced more accurately results of mapping urban physical components than those by SMA. With the multiyear Landsat TM data, we quantified sub-pixel percentage of ISA and the percentage of ISA changes to assess urban growth in Tampa, FL during the past 20 years. The experimental results demonstrate that MESMA approach is effective in mapping and monitoring urban land use/LC changes using moderate-resolution multispectral imagery at a sub-pixel level. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) We estimated urbanization rates (2001-2006) in the Gulf of Mexico region using the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) 2001 and 2006 impervious surface products. An improved method was used to update the NLCD impervious surface product in 2006 and associated land cover transition between 2001 and 2006. Our estimation reveals that impervious surface increased 416 km2 with a growth rate of 5.8% between 2001 and 2006. Approximately 1110.1 km2 of non-urban lands were converted into urban land, resulting in a 3.2% increase in the region. Hay/pasture, woody wetland, and evergreen forest represented the three most common land cover classes that transitioned to urban. Among these land cover transitions, more than 50% of the urbanization occurred within 50 km of the coast. Our analysis shows that the close-to-coast land cover transition trend, especially within 10 km off the coast, potentially imposes substantial long-term impacts on regional landscape and ecological conditions.
