[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Users of geographic information systems (GIS) usually render terrain using a point light source defined by an illumination vector. A terrain shaded from a single point provides good perceptual cues to surface orientation. This type of hill shading, however, does not include any visual cues to the relative height of surface elements. We propose shading the terrain under uniform diffuse illumination, where light arrives equally from all directions of a theoretical sky surrounding the terrain. Surface elements at lower elevations tend to have more of the sky obscured from view and are thus shaded darker. This tinting approach has the advantage that it provides more detailed renderings than point source illumination. We describe two techniques of computing terrain shading under uniform diffuse illumination. One technique uses a GIS-based hill-shading and shadowing tool to combine many point source renderings into one approximating the terrain under uniform diffuse illumination. The second technique uses a C++ computer algorithm for computing the inclination to the horizon in all azimuth directions at all points of the terrain. These virtual horizons are used to map sky brightness to the rendering of the terrain. To evaluate our techniques, we use two Digital Elevation Models (DEMs)-of the Schell Creek Range of eastern Nevada and a portion of downtown Houston, Texas, developed from Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) data. Renderings based on the uniform diffuse illumination model show more detailed changes in shading than renderings based on a point source illumination model. [Termes IGN] rugosité du solRésumé : (Auteur) Surface roughness at the scale of 10-2-10-1 m can be estimated using the ratio (RR) between surface-reflected solar radiance measured from two view angles at nearly the same time. As RR is primarily a function of the difference between effective sub-pixel shading observed from the two view-angles, the divergence from unity RR values, which are expected for smooth Lambertian surfaces (they have no shadows), was found to be proportional to roughness at the 10-2-10-1 m scale of geomorphic desert surfaces. Ground-based RR values at 1-m resolution, as well as remotely acquired RR values at 4-, 15- and 50-m resolutions, were compared with observed surface roughness in two hyperarid test sites, located in Death Valley, California, USA and the southem Negev Desert in Israel. The ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) 15-m stereoscopic capability is identified as an effective resource for obtaining relative subpixel surface-roughness estimates that are largely independent of surface composition and relatively insensitive to atmospheric effects. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a methodology to automatically detect and remove the shadows in high-resolution urban aerial images for urban GIS applications. The image is generated by ADS40, which is a multiple line scanner. The system includes shadow simulation, ray tracing, integrated shadow detection. and shadow removal. The geodetic shadow is simulated from a digital surface model (DSM) and the sun attitude. Using an ADS40 camera model and collinearity equations, the corresponding scan line of the shadow is obtained. Ray tracing is used to determine the visibility of the shadow in the image. A building boundary driven height field ray tracing method is proposed to boost the tracing efficiency. Shadow segmentation is taken from the RGB image at the base of the traced image shadows. The segmentation threshold is derived from the histogram of the traced image shadow area. Shadow removal includes the shadow region and companion region labelling, the histogram processing, and intensity mapping. Some experiment results are presented to show the effectiveness of the methods. [Termes IGN] régressionRésumé : (Auteur) Cloud-free optical satellite imagery simplifies remote sensing, but land-cover phenology limits existing solutions to persistent cloudiness to compositing temporally resolute, spatially coarser imagery. Here, a new strategy for developing cloud-free imagery at finer resolution permits simple automatic change detection. The strategy uses regression trees to predict pixel values underneath clouds and cloud shadows in reference scenes from other scene dates. It then applies improved histogram matching to adjacent scenes. In the study area, the islands of Puerto Rico, Vieques, and Culebra, Landsat image mosaics resulting from this strategy permit accurate detection of land development with only spectral data and maximum likelihood classification. Between about 1991 and 2000, urban/built-up lands increased by 7.2 percent in Puerto Rico and 49 percent in Vieques and Culebra. The regression tree modeling and histogram matching require no manual interpretation. Consequently, they can support large volume processing to distribute cloud-free imagery for simple change detections with common classifiers.
