[Termes IGN] recouvrement d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) A method is presented for the co-registration of overlapping elevation surfaces based on local slope analysis. Comparison and statistical analysis of local slope versus local elevation difference between overlapping surfaces allows for the estimation of both vertical and horizontal offsets between the two surfaces. This method is then used to re-align the flightlines of a Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) dataset collected in southern Idaho resulting in a dataset with significantly higher accuracy than the original. The relative horizontal accuracy is doubled, with a final value of approximately 25 to 30 cm, while the relative vertical accuracy is improved by several centimeters to a final valm of approximately 6 to 7 cm. [Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (Auteur) Geographical information systems (GIS) are important tools in coastal research and management. Coastal GIS applications involve special challenges, because the coastal environment is a complex transitional system between the terrestrial and marine realms. Also acquisition methods and responsibilities for spatial data (and thus their properties) change at the shoreline. This article explores the consequences of this land-sea divide for coastal terrain modelling. We study how methods designed for terrestrial environments can be used to create integrated raster coastal terrain models (CTMs) from coarse elevation and depth data. We focus on shore slopes, because many particularities of coastal terrain and the data which describe it as well as the resulting problems are concentrated in the shore zone. Based on shorelines, terrestrial contours, depth contours and depth points, we used the ANUDEM algorithm to interpolate CTMs at different spatial resolutions, with and without drainage enforcement, for two test areas in a highly complex archipelago coast. Slope aspect and gradient rasters were derived from the CTMs using Horn's algorithm. Values were assigned from the slope rasters to thousands of points along the test areas' shorelines in different ways. Shore slope gradients and aspects were also calculated directly from the shorelines and contours. These modelled data were compared to each other and to field-measured shore profiles using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. As far as the coarse source data permitted, the interpolation and slope calculations delivered good results at fine spatial resolutions. Vector-based slope calculations were very sensitive to quality problems of the source data. Fine-resolution raster data were consequently found most suitable for describing shore slopes from coarse coastal terrain data. Terrestrial and marine parts of the CTMs were subject to different errors, and modelling methods and parameters had different consequences there. Thus, methods designed for terrestrial applications can be successfully used for coastal terrain modelling, but the choice of methods and parameters and the interpretation of modelling results require special attention to the differences of terrestrial and marine topography and data. [Termes IGN] triangulation (topologie)Résumé : (Auteur) When the source data for the digital elevation model (DEM) are not known and any additional information or features such as skeleton lines of terrain is not available, a triangular regular network (TRN) is constructed with simple subdivision using one or two diagonals uniformly. Such a model gives inaccurate directions for interpolation because of the inaccurate diagonals used in triangulation and thereby, results in inaccurate contours representing artificial terrain features. In this study, a new method is developed based on slope information computed at DEM points determining accurate diagonals in the subdivision process, which is beneficial not only through the skeleton lines of a terrain but also all over the DEM. Consequently, it is shown that the proposed method is able to build a high fidelity TRN from a DEM without any additional information or features. [Termes IGN] reliefRésumé : (Auteur) This paper demonstrates the ability to identify representative ground elevation and vegetation height estimates within the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite/Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (ICESat/GLAS) waveforms for an area of mixed vegetation and varied topography. Estimating vegetation height within large-footprint Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) waveforms relies on the ability to estimate the uppermost canopy surface (signal beginning) and an elevation representing the ground surface, both of which are influenced by vegetation properties and topographic slope. We examined sources of uncertainty for vegetation height estimation from ICESat/GLAS data using airborne LiDAR data, field measurements and the FLIGHT radiative transfer model. In comparison with an independent 10-m resolution digital terrain model (DTM), a method using Gaussian decomposition of the satellite waveform produced a mean bias of -0.10 m when estimating ground elevation. A second method of estimating vegetation height using waveform extent and a terrain index effectively removed slope as an error source but produced a greater ground surface offset (-0.83 m). The two methods of estimating vegetation height compared well with airborne LiDAR estimates (correlation coefficient (R2) = 0.68, root mean square error (RMSE) = 4.4 m and R2 = 0.61, RMSE = 4.9 m, respectively). However, the complex interplay of the structural and optical properties of the intercepted vegetation and slope requires further understanding. A tool such as FLIGHT provides a useful means to explore the sensitivity of the waveform to both vegetation properties and topographic slope.
