[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The northern part of Lantau Island in Hong Kong is undergoing very rapid development following completion of the Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok on the island. This development is adjacent to a range of steeply sloping hills that experience levels of annual rainfall in the range of 2000-2400mm. Rainfall-induced landslides on this steeply sloping natural terrain are therefore potential hazards to property developments downslope. The objective of this study is to characterize the initiation process and the subsequent travel distance of the landslides resulting from recent rainstorms, by integrating aerial photogrammetry with GIS. These landslides, which occurred during the 18 July 1992 and 4-5 November 1993 rainstorms, were interpreted from sequential aerial photographs. Data on these landslides were collected to form a landslide database. Such data, together with information on geology, slope gradient, elevation, slope aspect, slope shape, and vegetation cover were entered into a Geographical Information System (GIS), to determine the geologic and geomorphologic characteristics of the landslide source and to estimate the travel distance of landslide debris. It is demonstrated that this integrated approach of GIS and aerial photogrammetry could serve as an effective means of landslide characterization. [Termes IGN] penteRésumé : (Auteur) Different methods for topographic correction of Landsat Thematic Mapper images have been assessed in the context of mapping vegetation types. The best results were obtained with a variation of the C method, which takes into account the overcorrection of low illuminated slopes by the original C method. The performance of this method was tested using two criteria: the changes in the spectral characteristics of the image and the reduction in standard deviation of each vegetation type after the correction. [Termes IGN] propagation d'erreurRésumé : (Auteur) This paper revisits the basic mathematical formulation of orthoimage (digital orthophoto) generation. The main objective is to provide an approach for predicting the accuracy of an orthoimage, according to the accuracy of the digital elevation model (DEM), control points and image measurements, the configuration of fiducial, tie and control points, and the ground slope. The approach is based on applying the wellknown law of error propagation to the mathematical model of orthoimage generation. Although it may seem intuitive for professionals in the field of photogrammetry, such an approach is essential in the era when specialists in other fields use offtheshelf software packages for orthoimage generation. Simulations with the derived approach show that the accuracy of the orthoimage is more sensitive to errors in image measurement of fiducial, tie and control points and ground coordinates of control points, than to DEM errors. Nonstandard configurations of fiducial, tie and control points further impair the accuracy. In addition, certain combinations of point location and ground slope might lead to unacceptably large error on the orthoimage. [Termes IGN] rayonnement solaireRésumé : (Auteur) Terrain parameters derived from digital elevation models (DEMs), such as slope gradient, aspect and cell surface area, are represented as a vector normal to the surface and calculated using the minimum areal unit of the DEM, that is enclosed between four data points. The position of the Sun is calculated by applying rotational matrices to a unit vector defined at noon as a function of latitude and declination. The direct component of insolation intercepted by the cell surface is then calculated as a dot product between the unit vector in the direction of the Sun and the unit vector normal to surface, multiplied by direct normal irradiation. Hillshading is computed by scanning the projection of cells onto a solar illumination plane perpendicular to the Sun direction. Horizon angles and estimated sky view factor are calculated using a more economical algorithm than a rigorous evaluation of all the angles subtended by every grid cell to each other. The performance of the slope algorithm is evaluated using a synthetic surface and real world examples are given for the Mont Blanc Massif, in the French Alps.
