[Termes IGN] Royaume-UniRésumé : (Auteur) Upland vegetation represents an important resource that requires frequent monitoring. However, the heterogeneous nature of upland vegetation and lack of ground data require classification techniques that have a high degree of generalization ability. This study investigates the use of artificial neural networks as a means of mapping upland vegetation from remotely sensed data. First, the optimum size of support to map upland vegetation was estimated as being less than 4 m, which suggested that soft classification techniques and high spatial resolution IKONOS imagery were required. The use of high spatial resolution imagery for regional-scale areas has introduced new challenges to the remote sensing community, such as using limited ground data and mapping land-cover dynamics and variation over large areas. This work then investigated the utility of artificial neural networks (ANN) for regional-scale upland vegetation from IKONOS imagery using limited ground data and to map unseen data from remote geographical locations. A Multiple Layer Perceptron was trained with pixels from an IKONOS image using early stopping; however, despite high classification accuracies when calculated for pixels from an area where training pixels were extracted, the networks did not produce high accuracies when applied to unseen data from a remote area. [Termes IGN] variable biophysique (végétation)Résumé : (Auteur) In this paper, an approach based on multiple estimator systems (MESs) for the estimation of biophysical parameters from remotely sensed data is proposed. The rationale behind the proposed approach is to exploit the peculiarities of an ensemble of different estimators in order to improve the robustness (and in some cases the accuracy) of the estimation process. The proposed MESs can be implemented in two conceptually different ways. One extends the use of an approach previously proposed in the regression literature to the estimation of biophysical parameters from remote sensing data. This approach integrates the estimates obtained from the different regression algorithms making up the ensemble by a direct linear combination (combination-based approach). The other consists of a novel approach that provides as output the estimate obtained by the regression algorithm (included in the ensemble) characterized by the highest expected accuracy in the region of the feature space associated with the considered pattern (selection-based approach). This estimator is identified based on a proper partition of the feature space. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been assessed on the problem of estimating water quality parameters from multispectral remote sensing data. In particular, the presented MES-based approach has been evaluated by considering different operational conditions where the single estimators included in the ensemble are: 1) based on the same or on different regression methods; 2) characterized by different tradeoffs between correlated errors and accuracy of the estimates; 3) trained on samples affected or not by measurement errors. In the definition of the ensemble particular attention is devoted to support vector machines (SVMs), which are a promising approach to the solution of regression problems. In particular, a detailed experimental analysis on the effectiveness of SVMs for solving the considered estimation problem is presented. The experimental results point out that the SVM method is effective and that the proposed MES approach is capable of increasing both the robustness and accuracy of the estimation process. [Termes IGN] résolution multipleRésumé : (Auteur) Many cases of remote sensing classification present complicated patterns that cannot he identified on the basis of spectral data alone, but require contextual methods that base class discrimination on the spatial relationships between the individual pixel and local and global configurations of neighboring pixels. However, the use of contextual classification is still limited by critical issues, such as complexity and problem dependency. We propose here a contextual classification strategy for object recognition in remote sensing images in an attempt to solve recognition tasks operatively. The salient characteristics of the strategy are the definition of a multiresolution feature extraction procedure exploiting human perception and the use of soft neural classification based on the multilayer perceptron model. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of the methodology, one in an easily controlled domain using synthetic images, the other two in real domains involving builtup pattern recognition in panchromatic aerial photographs and high-resolution satellite images. [Termes IGN] variation d'échelleRésumé : (Auteur) Contextual classification methods, which require the extraction of complex spatial information over a range of scales, from fine details in local areas to large features that extend across the image, are necessary in many remote sensing image classification studies. This work presents a supervised adaptive object recognition model which integrates scale-space filtering techniques for feature extraction within a Multilayer Perceptron neural network and the back-propagation learning task of the search of the most adequate filter parameters. The experimental evaluation of the method has been conducted in an easily controlled domain using synthetic imagery, and in the real domain coping with object recognition in high-resolution remote sensing imagery. To investigate whether the strategy can be considered an alternative to conventional procedures the results were compared with those obtained by a well known contextual classification scheme.
