[Termes IGN] phase GPSRésumé : (Auteur) Continuous global positioning system (GPS) stations propagate biases and spurious signals into the derived parameter time series when the measurements are subject to site-specific effects, such as multipath. This is a particular problem in the investigation of geophysical and atmospheric phenomena where signals may be small in magnitude. A methodology to remove these erroneous signals from long-term time series will significantly increase the usefulness of the derived time series. This work provides the theoretical basis for use of an empirical site model (ESM) derived from post-fit phase residuals to mitigate unmodelled site-specific errors. Additionally, we also investigate the effectiveness of applying an ESM to a regional GPS network and a short baseline solution. Under most observing scenarios, we show that the ESM approach is predicted to improve the precision and accuracy of the site coordinates. However, it is important to note that we found some scenarios where the ESM can introduce a bias. For instance, when the antenna is mounted close to the ground. In this scenario, for a short baseline, we observed the introduction of a 4-mm bias in height. Use of an ESM for the same short baseline with an uncalibrated radome substantially improves the results by removing a large bias of over 10 mm in height. Similarly, application of an ESM derived from historic data yields similar improvements. This demonstrates that the ESM can be a powerful tool when applied to appropriate site-specific configurations and could potentially be implemented in routine GPS analysis for a broad range of applications. In this month's column, we look at a straw-man concept for modifying the GBAS protocols to accomodate multiple constellations and results of preliminary tests using GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo simultaneously. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) In ground-based GPS meteorology, weighted mean temperature is the key parameter to calculate the conversion factor which will be used to map zenith wet delay to precipitable water vapor. In practical applications, we can hardly obtain the vertical profiles of meteorological parameters over the site, thus cannot use the integration method to calculate weighted mean temperature. In order to exactly calculate weighted mean temperature from a few meteorological parameters, this paper studied the relation between weighted mean temperature and surface temperature, surface water vapor pressure and surface pressure, and determined the relationship between, on the one hand, the weighted mean temperature, and, on the other hand, the surface temperature and surface water vapor pressure. Considering the seasonal and geographic variations in the relationship, we employed the trigonometry functions with an annual cycle and a semi-annual cycle to fit the residuals (seasonal and geographic variations are reflected in the residuals). Through the above work, we finally established the GTm-I model and the PTm-I model with a 2 2.5 (latlon) resolution. Test results show that the two models both show a consistent high accuracy around the globe, which is about 1.0 K superior to the widely used Bevis weighted mean temperature–surface temperature relationship in terms of root mean square error. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we propose a novel Bayesian procedure to update the probability distribution for a set of possible atmospheric states, once ground measures of temperature, pressure, humidity, and tropospheric delay of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals are made. It is based on a representative dataset of matching pairs of reanalysis atmospheric states and ground measures. By applying the basic rules of probability theory and logic inference, a computable expression for the conditional probability of the states given the measures is found. This allows us to select the most plausible atmospheric conditions, consistent with ground observations. Compared with more conventional techniques, the proposed approach has the advantage of always giving a result, even if not all the measures are available. Moreover, it provides the probability distributions of the retrieved quantities, which collapse to the corresponding prior distributions in the worst case of no significant measures. In any case, the final uncertainties are fully quantified, as needed for many meteorological applications, including data assimilation and ensemble forecasts for a numerical weather model. In addition to the theoretical details, a practical example of operational application, using a ten-year dataset on a Mediterranean test site, is also presented. The most probable retrieved atmospheric profiles of water vapor and temperature, as well as the corresponding values of precipitable water, are compared with balloon measurements on such a test site, showing good agreement and a significant improvement when the GNSS delay measure is added. In particular, the precipitable water retrieval turns out at least as accurate as that obtained with conventional approaches.
