[Termes descripteurs IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (auteur) Key Message: This study showed that digital terrestrial photogrammetry is able to produce accurate estimates of stem volume and diameter across a range of species and tree sizes that showed strong correspondence when compared with traditional inventory techniques. This paper demonstrates the utility of the technology for characterizing trees in complex habitats such as boreal mixedwood forests.
Context: Accurate knowledge of tree stem taper and volume are key components of forest inventories to manage and study forest resources. Recent developments have seen the increasing use of ground-based point clouds, including from digital terrestrial photogrammetry (DTP), to provide accurate estimates of these key forest attributes.
Aims: In this study, we evaluated the utility of DTP based on a small set of photos (12 per tree) for estimating stem volume and taper on a set of 15 trees from 6 different species (Populus tremuloides, Picea glauca, Pinus contorta latifolia, Betula papyrifera, Picea mariana, Abies balsamea) in a boreal mixedwood forest in Alberta, Canada.
Methods: We constructed accurate photogrammetric point clouds and derived taper and volume from three point cloud–based methods, which were then compared with estimates from conventional, field-based measurements. All methods were evaluated for their accuracy based on field-measured taper and volume of felled trees.
Results: Of the methods tested, we found that the point cloud–derived diameters in a taper curve matching approach performed the best at estimating diameters at the lowest parts of the stem ( 50% of total height). Using the field-measured DBH and height as inputs to calculate stem volume yielded the most accurate predictions; however, these were not significantly different from the best point cloud-based estimates.

These 2D plans may not effectively communicate and manage the spatial complexity associated with multi-layered and stacked properties in such buildings; additionally, multiple pages of plans (representing sections of the building) are required to represent all ownership boundaries. In response, land administration organizations have been investigating a 3D digital approach to managing information about ownership rights in high-rise building structures. In this article, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is proposed as a feasible approach for managing land and property information in high-rise buildings. BIM provides a collaborative, digital and intelligent 3D data environment for managing building information throughout the lifecycle of buildings. However, there is currently no capacity in BIM for recording and representing information about ownership and boundaries of properties, which is core land administration information. Therefore, this article proposes an extension to the BIM standard, which is implemented in a prototype BIM model of a complex building to showcase the potential capability of using BIM for high-rise land administration and for modeling 3D ownership rights. [Termes descripteurs IGN] photogrammétrie terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents an effective approach for self-calibration with lens distortion using a single image combined with geometric constraints including vanishing points and ellipses. To improve the accuracy of self-calibration, radial distortion and distortion center are included in the calibration procedure. First, assuming image center as the symmetric center, the first radial distortion coefficient and vanishing points are simultaneously optimized from line segments in the image. Second, by utilizing the optimized vanishing points and extracted ellipse, principal distance and principal point are estimated. Last, distortion center is set as the current calculated principal point, and the above steps are then repeated until the principal point reaches a stable solution. Extensive quantitative and qualitative studies of the approach are performed. The experiments pertaining to simulated and real images demonstrate that the approach is effective and suitable and that the approach obtains satisfactory results. This paper reviews aspects of sensor modelling and photogrammetric calibration, with attention being focussed on techniques of automated self-calibration. Following an initial overview of the history and the state of the art, selected topics of current interest within calibration for close-range photogrammetry are addressed. These include sensor modelling, with standard, extended and generic calibration models being summarised, along with non-traditional camera systems. Self-calibration via both targeted planar arrays and targetless scenes amenable to SfM-based exterior orientation are then discussed, after which aspects of calibration and measurement accuracy are covered. Whereas camera self-calibration is largely a mature technology, there is always scope for additional research to enhance the models and processes employed with the many camera systems nowadays utilised in close-range photogrammetry.
