[Termes IGN] savaneRésumé : (Auteur) Long term observations of global vegetation from multiple satellites require much effort to ensure continuity and compatibility due to differences in sensor characteristics and product generation algorithms. In this study, we focused on the band-pass filter differences and empirically investigated cross-sensor relationships of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and reflectance. The specific objectives were: 1) to understand the systematic trends in cross-sensor relationships of the NDVI and reflectance as a function of spectral band-passes, 2) to examine/ identify the relative importance of the spectral features (i.e., the green peak, red edge, and leaf liquid water absorption regions) in and the mechanism(s) of causing the observed systematic trends, and 3) to evaluate the performance of several empirical cross-calibration methods in modelling the observed systematic trends. A Level 1A Hyperion hyperspectral image acquired over a tropical forest-savanna transitional region in Brazil was processed to simulate atmospherically corrected reflectances and NDVI for various band-passes, including Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS), NOAA-14 Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), and Landsat7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+). Data were extracted from various land cover types typically found in tropical forest and savanna biomes and used for analyses. Both NDVI and reflectance relationships among the sensors were neither linear nor unique and were found to exhibit complex patterns and band-pass dependencies. The reflectance relationships showed strong land cover dependencies. The NDVI relationships, in contrast, did not show land cover dependencies, but resulted in non-linear forms. From sensitivity analyses, the green peak (550 nm) and red-NIR transitional (680780 nm) features were identified as the key factors in producing the observed land cover dependencies and non-linearity in cross-sensor relationships. In particular, differences in the extents to which the red and/or NIR band-passes included these features significantly influenced the forms and degrees of non-linearity in the relationships. Translation of MODIS NDVI to "AVHRR Iike" NDVI using a weighted average of MODIS green and red bands performed very poorly, resulting in no reduction of overall discrepancy between MODIS and AVHRR NDVI. Cross-calibration of NDVI and reflectance using NDVI-based quadratic functions performed well, reducing their differences to +.025 units for the NDVI and +.01 units for the reflectances; however, many of the translation results suffered from bias errors. The present results suggest that distinct translation equations and coefficients need to be developed for every sensor pairs and that land cover-dependency need to be explicitly accounted for to reduce bias errors. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) Atmospheric water vapour is a major limitation for high precision Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) applications due to its significant impact on microwave signals. We propose a statistical criterion to test whether an independent water vapour product can reduce water vapour effects on InSAR interferograms, and assess the potential of the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) near-infrared water vapour products for correcting Advanced SAR (ASAR) data. Spatio-temporal comparisons show c- 1.1 mm agreement between MERIS and GPS/radiosonde water vapour products in terms, of standard deviations. One major limitation with the use of MERIS water vapour products is the frequency of cloud free conditions. Our analysis indicate, that in spite of the low global cloud free conditions (~251%), the frequency can be much higher for certain areas such as Eastern Tibet (~38%) and southern California (~48%). This suggests that MERIS water vapour products show potential for correcting ASAR interferometric measurements in certain regions. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) This letter presents an experiment carried out in Toulouse in May 2004 to study the spectral variability and bidirectional reflectance behaviour of urban materials. The measurements were carried out at a 20 cm spatial resolution in the visible and near‐infrared (350–2500 nm). These measurements allow quantification of three main types of reflectance spatial variability. In addition to these in situ experiments, the bidirectional properties of urban material samples were studied in the laboratory with a goniometer. [Termes IGN] seuillage d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) A de-shadowing technique is presented for multispectral and hyperspectral imagery over land acquired by satellite/airborne sensors. The method requires a channel in the visible and at least one spectral band in the near-infrared (0.8-1um) region, but performs much better if bands in the short-wave infrared region (around 1.6 and 2.2 um) are available as well. The algorithm consists of these major components: (i) calculation of the covariance matrix and zero-reflectance matched filter vector, (ii) derivation of the unsealed and scaled shadow function, (iii) histogram thresholding of the unscaled shadow function to define the core shadow areas, (iv) region growing to include the surroundings of the core shadow areas for a smooth shadowlclear transition, and (v) de-shadowing of the pixels in the final shadow mask. The critical parameters of the method are discussed. Example images from different climates and landscapes are presented to demonstrate the successful performance of the shadow removal process over land surfaces.
