[Vedettes matières IGN] Economie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Pure and even-aged (PEA) forests of fast growing conifer species have for long been key providers of industrial raw material. Despite recent concern regarding their greater sensitivity to major natural disturbances, their impacts onto biodiversity and their funding efficiency, PEA conifer forests could remain a major economic target given the ongoing European strategy for bioeconomy. These forests are encountered across contrasted climates and in both native and introduced contexts across Europe giving rise to high uncertainties regarding their growth responses to current climate change. Using the French national forest inventory data, we inquired the radial growth of eight major conifer species in European forestry across 16 regional native and introduced PEA forest systems (n > 10,000 trees). Growth trends over the 2006-2016 period exhibited a negative association with absolute growth level in 2006, with strongest negative trends found for emblematic PEA forestry species (e.g. Norway spruce and Douglas-fir), and strongest positive trends for pine species (e.g. Scots pine). While the greater growth rate advantage of some species may shorten rotation and lower risk exposures for future decades, recent lowered productivity may affect the forest sector in the long run. The prevalence of PEA forests across European forest landscapes and their increasingly reported lower resilience to climate change compared to more complex forest systems call for the establishment of a long-term European forest policy strategy. Maintaining the environmental, social and economic benefits of forests should remain a priority in the European agenda, regardless of the financial costs at stake. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) A novel methodological framework is presented for climate-sensitive modeling of annual radial stem increments using tree-ring width time series. The approach is based on a hierarchical Bayes model together with a distributed time lag model that take into account the effects of a series of monthly temperature and precipitation values, as well as their interactions. By using a set of random walk priors, the hierarchical Bayes model allows both the detrending of the individual time series and the regression modeling to be performed simultaneously in a single model step. The approach was applied to comprehensive tree-ring width data from Austria collected on sample plots arranged in triplets representing different mixture types. Bayesian predictions revealed that European larch (Larix decidua Mill.), Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.), and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) show positive climate-related growth trends throughout higher elevation sites in Tyrol, and these trends remain unchanged under a mixed-stand scenario. At the lower Austrian sites, Norway spruce was found to show a severely negative growth trend under both the pure- and mixed-stand scenario. The increment rates of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) were found to have a negative climate-related trend in pure stands, and the trend diminished through an admixture of spruce or larch. The trends of European larch and sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) showed stationary behavior, irrespective of the mixture scenario. Scots pine data showed a positive trend at the lower elevation sites under both the pure- and mixed-stand scenario. These findings indicate that species mixing does not lower the climate-related increment fluctuations of beech, oak, pine, and spruce at lower elevation sites. We showed that fire-related traits of some pine species are strongly related to other factors than fire but the recent fire history has nonetheless an impact on the variation of key traits for different fire adaptive strategies.
Context: In fire-prone Mediterranean areas, climate change is expected to exacerbate the fire pressure on ecosystems, altering the current fire regime and threatening species if they cannot acclimate.
Aims: Studying intraspecific variations of some fire-related traits in relation to variation in recent fire activity is thus an important step to better understand if this acclimation is possible.
Methods: We measured structural (bark thickness, shoot bulk density, self-pruning, leaf surface to volume ratio) and functional (serotiny level for Pinus halepensis only) traits in two pines species (Pinus halepensis and Pinus sylvestris) commonly found in southeastern France and that present different fire-adaptive strategies (resilience vs resistance, respectively). Populations were sampled according to different fire frequency modalities (0 vs 1 to 2 fires) along a geographical gradient, measuring numerous environmental and plant characteristics to be used cofactors in the analyses.
Results: As expected, trait variation was strongly linked to environmental and tree characteristics as well as to ontogeny overriding the effect of fire modalities, even though using integrative models with random effect. However, fire modalities had an impact on the variance of some key fire-related traits of Pinus halepensis.

However, quantitative assessment of forest management on tree growth has been demanding as methodologies for capturing changes comprehensively in space and time have been lacking. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has shown to be capable of providing three-dimensional (3D) tree stem reconstructions required for revealing differences between stem shapes and sizes. In this study, we used 3D reconstructions of tree stems from TLS and an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to investigate how varying thinning treatments and the following growth effects affected stem shape and size of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees. The results showed that intensive thinning resulted in more stem volume and therefore total biomass allocation and carbon uptake compared to the moderate thinning. Relationship between tree height and diameter at breast height (i.e. slenderness) varied between both thinning intensity and type (i.e. from below and above) indicating differing response to thinning and allocation of stem growth of Scots pine trees. Furthermore, intensive thinning, especially from below, produced less variation in relative stem attributes characterizing stem shape and size. Thus, it can be concluded that thinning intensity, type, and the following growth effects have an impact on post-thinning stem shape and size of Scots pine trees. Our study presented detailed measurements on post-thinning stem growth of Scots pines that have been laborious or impracticable before the emergence of detailed 3D technologies. Moreover, the stem reconstructions from TLS and UAV provided variety of attributes characterizing stem shape and size that have not traditionally been feasible to obtain. The study demonstrated that detailed 3D technologies, such as TLS and UAV, provide information that can be used to generate new knowledge for supporting forest management and silviculture as well as improving ecological understanding of boreal forests.
