[Termes IGN] savaneRésumé : (Auteur)Ecosystem responses to interannual weather variability are large and superimposed over any long-term directional climatic responses making it difficult to assign causal relationships to vegetation change. Better understanding of ecosystem responses to interannual climatic variability is crucial to predicting long-term functioning and stability. Hyperspectral data have the potential to detect ecosystem responses that are undetected by broadband sensors and can be used to scale to coarser resolution global mapping sensors, e.g., advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) and MODIS. This research focused on detecting vegetation responses to interannual climate using the airborne visible-infrared imaging spectrometer (AVIRIS) data over a natural savanna in the Central Coast Range in California. Results of linear spectral mixture analysis and assessment of the model errors were compared for two AVIRIS images acquired in spring of a dry and a wet year. The results show that mean unmixed fractions for these vegetation types were not significantly different between years due to the high spatial variability within the landscape. However, significant community differences were found between years on a pixel basis, underlying the importance of site-specific analysis. Multitemporal hyperspectral coverage is necessary to understand vegetation dynamics. [Termes IGN] VénézuelaRésumé : (Auteur) After the devastation caused by two weeks of torrential rain in Venezuela in the second half of December 1999, it is estimated that up to 30,000 people have died in floods and landslides; a further 200,000 people have been left homeless as whole towns along the Caribbean coast have been washed away (Centeno 1999). Concerned about the dramatic extent of this human tragedy, PRIVATEERS N.V. has immediately offered its support to Venezuela. Supported by the French Space Agency (CNES) and the European Space Agency (ESA) who provided the sets of SPOT and ERS SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images acquired before and after the disaster, this project aims to the provision of cartographic maps designed to assess the situation and to help with the rehabilitation of the country. These maps are designed to be easily exploitable by local photo-interpreters. The theorical justification of the ATI method depends on the ergodicity of the probability density function (fdp) of the rain rate. This study concerns the analysis and the validation of the ATI method for the soudano-sahelian squall lines and notably for the both types of structures which compose the squall line : the convection line and the stratiform region. In a first step, the relations between <Ro> and F(t) are experimentally established. A sensibility analysis of the proportionality factor in relation with the statistical variations of the instantaneous fdp of the rain rate is presented. In a second step, the stability of the climatological distributions of R over the time and when the measuring devices are different (radar, disdrometer, or raingage) is discussed. Finally we propose a synthetic regime diagram in which the proportionality factor S(t) is function of an undimensional number ø defined as the fraction between the "convective" area and the "stratiform" area. Some results collected in previous measurement campaigns, plotted on the regime diagram, show a slope dependence opposite to the parameter ø. We suggest that ø is a pertinent parameter for the estimation of the quantity <Ro> from the satellite infrared pictures.
