[Termes IGN] station virtuelle de référenceRésumé : (Editeur) Surveyors and geodesists pioneered the use of GPS carrier-phase positioning in the early 1980s when only a few Block I test satellites were in orbit. Receiver measurements were recorded simultaneously at project or rover sites and a reference site and, after collection, the data were post-processed back in the office. Post-processing of differenced carrier phases became a standard high-accuracy positioning technique and is still frequently used today. However, some high-accuracy positioning and navigation tasks require real-time operations. In the mid-1990s, real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning was developed. In RTK positioning, a receiver at a reference site makes pseudo-range and carrier-phase measurements, which are transmitted over a radio link to one or more rover receivers in the field. A rover receiver combines its measurements with those received over the radio link and, resolving the carrier-phase ambiguities, accurately determines its coordinates. Because atmospheric and satellite-position errors decorrelate with increasing distance between reference and rover receivers, the ability to perform successful ambiguity resolution decreases with distance as well. This limits the effective distance between reference stations and rovers. To overcome this limitation efficiently, the concept of network RTK was developed where data from a number of reference stations are used in a filter to determine the measurement errors across the network and then to provide corrections to rovers or to synthesize data for a virtual reference station (VRS) in the vicinity of a particular rover. As the number of stations in a network grows, the more processing is required to generate corrections and VRS data streams. And as more satellite signals are observed by reference and rover receivers, even higher demands are placed on the network RTK filter processing. In this month's column, we look at an innovative filter technique for significantly extending the number of reference stations that can be supported for network RTK positioning under modernized GNSS. [Termes IGN] système de référence géodésiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The Geographical Survey Institute published a new geodetic datum (the Japanese Geodetic Datum 2000, JGD2000) in April 2002. The JGD2000 is a static geocentric datum compliant with the International Terrestrial Reference Frame 1994 at the first epoch, January 1997, in which coordinates of control points are unchanged with time. Therefore, in order to keep the datum from becoming distorted, relative coordinate changes of markers due to crustal deformations caused by earthquakes and the steady plate motion must be corrected. So far, the changes induced by earthquakes have been revised with surface displacements detected by actual GPS observations. However, a large earthquake that occurs in a plate boundary such as the 2003 Tokachi-Oki event (M8.0) will cause deformation covering several hundred square kilometers, and resurveying all the relevant control points would be prohibitively expensive. On the other hand, the strain accumulation caused by the steady plate motion has been neglected since public projects have focused on local surveys using small networks (baselines 30-100 km). To cope with these two assignments, we develop crustal movement models to obtain coordinate corrections. With these models, we show that (1) an interpolation of observed displacements effectively reproduces co-seismic deformations without dense measurements and (2) the same method is valid for correcting the inter-seismic strain accumulation. For the latter, we show the validity of semi-dynamic datum correction already adopted in New Zealand. Combining these methods with the advanced GPS network enables us to efficiently and effectively maintain the JGD2000 for modern surveys. [Termes IGN] véhicule sans piloteRésumé : (Auteur) Land-based Mobile Mapping Systems (MMS) are widely used in a variety of applications; these systems generally capture image data along the corridor the vehicle travels and the collected imagery gets processed offline. The output of a state-of-the-art MMS system includes a surface description, visualization data and an inventory of major objects positioned along the mapped corridor. This is exactly the information an autonomous vehicle needs for navigation, except that it is needed in real-time, and not only the static objects but the moving ones should be mapped too. The on-the-fly mapping of the vicinity of an autonomously navigated vehicle posed a formidable challenge for the participants of both DARPA Grand Challenges. This paper provides an analysis of the real-time mapping effort through the experiences of the Ohio State University Desert Buckeyes 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge autonomous off-road vehicle entry. [Termes IGN] visibilitéRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes an automated method for predicting the number of satellites visible to a GPS receiver, at any point on the Earth's surface at any time. Intervisibility analysis between a GPS receiver and each potentially visible GPS satellite is performed using a number of different surface models and satellite orbit calculations. The developed software can work with various ephemeris data, and will compute satellite visibility in real time. Real-time satellite availability prediction is very useful for mobile applications such as in-car navigation systems, personal navigations systems and LBS. The implementation of the method is described and the results are reported.
