[Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) An artificial rainfall event was applied to a forested slope in Ruedlingen, northern Switzerland. The experiment triggered a landslide which resulted in mobilising about 130 m3 of debris. The event was monitored by a photogrammetric network of four cameras, operating at 5 to 8 frames per second, in order to quantify spatial and temporal changes by tracking tennis balls pegged into the ground. Image measurements were performed using automated image matching methods, implemented through a software package developed in-house. Three-dimensional coordinates of the target points were estimated by running a customised type of bundle adjustment, achieving a positioning precision of + 1·8 cm. [Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Global change is of key scientific interest, and satellite altimetry recently became a major tool to provide information on sea level on a continuous and worldwide basis. However, any error in the radar altimeter data, and more specifically any error in the altimeter drift, would directly map as an undetected error in the derived mean sea level trend. This explains why satellite altimeter calibration is such an important metrological challenge for all satellite missions such as Jason-2 (US/France), Cryosat-2 (Europe), HY-2A (China), and many others.
On January 20–21, 2011, an international meeting was organized in Chania, Crete, on the following theme: “satellite altimetry calibration and deformation monitoring with GNSS”. Due to the importance of the scientific problems discussed during this meeting and to recent new methods proposed for altimeter calibration, the idea of a Special Issue in Advances in Space Research was proposed. An international call for participation was issued shortly after, and 27 manuscripts were submitted from authors from six different countries. All manuscripts went through the standard peer-review process for ASR with a minimum of two referees for each paper.
Many topics were addressed for this Special Issue: satellite altimeter calibration using dedicated GPS receivers, tide gauges or buoys, calibration sites, calibration on lakes or rivers, coastal altimetry, and crustal deformation using GPS techniques.
We thank the contribution of each author and extend our gratitude to all the referees; those who agreed to be identified by name are listed at the end of this issue.Numéro de notice : A2013-838 Affiliation des auteurs : LASTIG LAREG (2012-mi2018) Thématique : POSITIONNEMENT Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.asr.2013.01.004 Date de publication en ligne : 11/01/2013 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.asr.2013.01.004 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=91300

[Termes IGN] TwitterRésumé : (Auteur) Social media feeds are rapidly emerging as a novel avenue for the contribution and dissemination of information that is often geographic. Their content often includes references to events occurring at, or affecting specific locations. Within this article, we analyze the spatial and temporal characteristics of the twitter feed activity responding to a 5.8 magnitude earthquake which occurred on the East Coast of the United States (US) on August 23, 2011. We argue that these feeds represent a hybrid form of a sensor system that allows for the identification and localization of the impact area of the event. By contrasting this with comparable content collected through the dedicated crowdsourcing ‘Did You Feel It?’ (DYFI) website of the U.S. Geological Survey we assess the potential of the use of harvested social media content for event monitoring. The experiments support the notion that people act as sensors to give us comparable results in a timely manner, and can complement other sources of data to enhance our situational awareness and improve our understanding and response to such events. Note de contenu : Introduction

[Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) The All-Weather Volcano Topography Imaging Sensor remote sensing instrument is a custom-built millimeter-wave (MMW) sensor that has been developed as a practical field tool for remote sensing of volcanic terrain at active lava domes. The portable instrument combines active and passive MMW measurements to record topographic and thermal data in almost all weather conditions from ground-based survey points. We describe how the instrument is deployed in the field, the quality of the primary ranging and radiometric measurements, and the postprocessing techniques used to derive the geophysical products of the target terrain, surface temperature, and reflectivity. By comparison of changing topography, we estimate the volume change and the lava extrusion rate. Validation of the MMW radiometry is also presented by quantitative comparison with coincident infrared thermal imagery.
