[Termes IGN] transformation de coordonnéesRésumé : (Auteur) We define as Positional Accuracy Improvement the problem of putting together maps A and B of the same area, with B of higher planimetric accuracy. To do so, all objects in A might have to be slightly moved according to a mathematical transformation. Such transformation might ideally be of a specific type, like analytical or conformal functions. We have developed a theory to find a suitable analytical transformation despite it is not well defined because the only data available is the displacement vectors at a limited number of homologue control points. There exists a similar problem in fluid mechanics devoted on estimating the complete velocity field given just values at a limited number of points. We borrowed some ideas from there and introduced them into the positional accuracy improvement problem. We shall demonstrate that it is possible to numerically estimate an analytic function that resembles the given displacement at control points. As a byproduct, an uncertainty estimation is produced, which might help to detect regions of different lineage. The theory has been applied to rural 1:50.000 cartography of Uruguay while trying to diminish the discrepancies against GNSS readings. After the analytic transformation, the RMSE error diminished from 116m to 48 m. Other problems with similar math requirements are the transformation between geodetic control networks. [Termes IGN] rumbRésumé : (Auteur) Mercator's map projection (1569) has often been regarded as a scientifically disinterested innovation in projecting the globe onto a plane surface. This paper argues that by resituating Mercator's career within the theological conflicts of the European Reformation, it is possible to identify a more moralised, stoic inspiration for the projection's creation. In particular, Mercator's preceding work on theology and chronology disclose other ways of interpreting the projection. The rhumb line is taken as a defining element of Mercator's theological geography. [Termes IGN] transformation de coordonnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The meridian arc length from the equator to arbitrary latitude is of utmost importance in map projection, particularly in the Gauss-Krüger projection. In Japan, the previously used formula for the meridian arc length was a power series with respect to the first eccentricity squared of the earth ellipsoid, despite the fact that a more concise expansion using the third flattening of the earth ellipsoid has been derived. One of the reasons that this more concise formula has rarely been recognized in Japan is that its derivation is difficult to understand. This paper shows an explicit derivation of a general formula in the form of a power series with respect to the third flattening of the earth ellipsoid. Since the derived formula is suitable for implementation as a computer program, it has been applied to the calculation of coordinate conversion in the Gauss-Krüger projection for trial. [Termes IGN] projection Universal Transverse MercatorRésumé : (Auteur) Implementations of two algorithms for the transverse Mercator projection are described; these achieve accuracies close to machine precision. One is based on the exact equations of Thompson and Lee and the other uses an extension of Krüger’s series for the mapping to higher order. The exact method provides an accuracy of 9 nm over the entire ellipsoid, while the errors in the series method are less than 5 nm within 3900 km of the central meridian. In each case, the meridian convergence and scale are also computed with similar accuracy. The speed of the series method is competitive with other less accurate algorithms and the exact method is about five times slower.
